Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to discuss the reopening of the Singapore and Malaysian border with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in early May, according to Malaysian newspaper The Star. The leaders will be meeting in Singapore on May 4 for an official visit.

The possible reopening of the borders was first discussed in March this year when Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore's Foreign Minister, met up with Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein in Kuala Lumpur.

During that meeting, both countries committed to getting cross-border travel started progressively and safely for different groups of travellers. This is on top of the existing reciprocal green lane and periodic commuting arrangement.

Dr Balakrishnan had also said in that meeting that Singapore would review the current suspension of the reciprocal green lane which happened on February 1 as a result of more Covid-19 cases. The suspension is supposed to last three months. 

Aside from Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong have also resumed talks over a much-delayed travel bubble.
