Shake Shack, the burger chain that boasts a cult-like following in the US, has announced plans to open its first Asian outpost in Tokyo next year.
After London, Moscow, Istanbul, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the burger chain that draws snaking lines of faithful followers will open a restaurant in Tokyo next year -- the first of 10 Shake Shack restaurants that will be built in Japan through 2020.

After expanding to Russia, Turkey, the UK and the Middle East, the Tokyo opening will mark the chain’s first Asian outpost. Popular for its Angus beef burgers, frozen custards and crinkle-cut fries, the mid-sized burger chain is pitched as a gourmet burger alternative to fast food chains like McDonald’s and Burger King.

When it arrives in Japan, Shake Shack will confront fierce competition from favorite domestic burger chains like Mos Burger and Freshness Burger.
Shake Shack is owned and operated by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG), which runs some of New York’s most popular restaurants including Union Square Café, Gramercy Tavern and Blue Smoke.
