A motoring-related event brought Lee Li Qing and Justin Tay together, and fittingly, their union was a high-octane celebration with plenty of lights, sounds and action.

Motoring enthusiast Justin Tay and UBS client advisor Lee Li Qing found the road to love when they attended a dinner organised by the Singapore Road Safety Council in 2011. The managing director of Specialised Automobiles and former president of the Lamborghini Club Singapore who is a non-executive director with leisure and lifestyle group SUTL, where his uncle Arthur Tay is chairman, was introduced to Li Qing by a mutual friend and they ended up sitting together that entire evening.

In October 2014, he proposed in lavish style at a magnificent seven-room villa in Samujana, Koh Samui. Li Qing recalls, “He secretly arranged it with our friends who flew to Koh Samui for the surprise. The poolside was decorated with balloons and floating on the water were the words ‘Marry Me’ formed out of roses. He then went down on bended knee to propose. When I said yes, our friends who had jumped out of hiding just moments earlier, released balloons into the sky. It was a magical moment.”

The nuptials began with a solemnisation ceremony at Barker Road Methodist Church where the bride made an impressive entrance on the arm of her father in a Divine Couture gown with a feminine sweetheart neckline and long train. Her outfit was accessorised with jewellery gifted by her parents and Justin’s mum. Waiting at the end of the aisle was a beaming Justin, dressed in a black tuxedo by Ermenegildo Zegna.

Pink and blue made for a cheerful colour palette, with the floral decorations in church showcasing the rosy hue and bridesmaids dressed in sky blue. A tea ceremony followed where Li Qing donned a stunning all-lace ivory creation by Divine Couture with a plunging back that showed the designer’s impeccable handcraftsmanship. Later that day, family and friends celebrated the newlywed couple over a light-filled soiree at Capella Singapore in Sentosa.

“I’ve always loved fairy lights, so Anna Lim, my planner from Spellbound, created a beautiful backdrop with a platform of fairy lights leading to the stage,” shares Li Qing.

As guests took their seats at the tables awaiting the arrival of the newlyweds, they admired 3D projections on the wall which showed romantic sceneries, the couple’s photos and fireworks. Throughout the dinner, the room was lit up with ‘dancing’ live projections of forests, fields of flowers, mountains, lakes, stars and constellations! It was a wonderful sensory experience for our guests as they had their dinner,” says Li Qing.

The couple, wearing their wedding outfits, walked in to applause and cheers from family and friends. As fine food and wine flowed, guests were entertained by two local bands, Summertimes and Jack & Rai, while radio and TV personality Vernetta Lopez was the master of ceremonies.

For the second march in, the bride dazzled in a scarlet number from Pronovias that hugged her shapely frame before blooming out into a flowy skirt with a short train. Justin looked ready to party in a chic white tuxedo. Guests let off party poppers to welcome the bridal couple again, signalling that the evening was about to get even better.

Speeches delivered by maid-of-honour Wanyui, the bride’s younger sister Li Ping and bestman Pravin left not one dry eye in the room. Unbeknownst to Li Qing, her sister had prepared a video that documented their growing up years together. It was condensed into a cartoon art piece which she presented to the bride during her speech. “It was touching, heartwarming and brought tears to my eyes,” says Li Qing.

Also moving was the violin and piano recital by Justin’s three young cousins “It was really sweet,” says the bride.

More surprises followed for the much-loved couple, including a video jointly produced by the couple’s parents in which they shared golden words of advice and funny anecdotes about the pair’s childhood. Then there was a surprise music video from Li Qing’s friends who sent well wishes from different parts of the world. It also included scenes depicting them planning the surprise proposal in Koh Samui.

As a parting note, guests received leather travel currency wallets—black for men and red for ladies—with multicoloured zips. They were individually customised and printed with guests’ names. “We wanted something special and yet useful for our guests, and we thought that printing their individual names added a warmer touch to the gift,” explains Li Qing.
