Space Furniture’s new initiative, Green Space, aims to raise awareness of sustainable furniture design and manufacturing

In our bid to live a ‘greener' lifestyle, most of us have traded plastic bags for reusable shoppers, gone paperless (as far as possible), and made concerted efforts to recycle. But do we also extend that consideration to the furniture that fills our homes? Space Furniture, Asia Pacific's largest and leading supplier of premium design, believes that we should, and has embarked on an initiative to raise awareness of the environmental impacts of furniture manufacturing. And it's not just in the hands of the people who make the furniture, but those who buy them - that is, you and me.

Christened "Green Space", the initiative aims to develop a greater understanding of the three main aspects of Space's philosophy - quality of materials, standards of manufacture and durability of design - and has been launched with a limited print run booklet, which can be viewed online here. Inside, you'll find a visually pleasant, easy-to-digest presentation of the various manufacturing processes and standards that exist around the world, as well as the green initiatives undertaken by Space's key brand partners. For example, two of the world's most iconic and ecologically responsible designs are exclusively retailed at Space Asia - the Carl Hansen Wishbone Chair and the Emeco 111 Navy Chair.

"Very few people are aware of the potential ecological impact of the production of furniture, and how their choices can significantly improve local environments in the region and the world," says Syddal Wee, general manager of Space Asia. In fact, all core brands represented by Space Asia adhere to stringent EU manufacturing standards or the local equivalent. Aptly termed ‘design durables', the products incorporate the three aforementioned hallmarks of Space's philosophy, and limit wastage because they're made to last.

Calling all architects, designers and design students - as part of the Green Space initiative, Space is running the Make a Green Pledge contest from now until June 30. Come up with your own creative Green Pledge and stand a chance to win one of two Emeco 111 Navy chairs. Click here for details.
