At a time when we’re spending more time at home than ever before, even that feeling of wanderlust seems hard to quell, as we stay entertained at home by watching inspiring travel documentaries and vlogs.

As we look forward to brighter days ahead by planning for future vacations in the near future, we ask designers what are some of the features that travellers might soon experience at luxury hotels abroad, enhanced by the latest innovations in screen technology.

An artistic first impression

Lobbies are set to wow their new visitors, with some hotel developers looking into the creative possibilities of having larger screens installed to create a multi-sensory digital experience for their guests.

Among the latest large-format displays is The Wall by Samsung, which features micro-LED technology, a non-reflective screen that can offer brilliant and precise colour in various lighting conditions. Its sheer size means that it could easily cover the full-length of a wall, while its bezel-less design offers an almost seamless integration with the overall interior design scheme.

“The Wall looks impressive and we are in the midst of exploring ways to use it in a current hotel project we are working on,” shares Terri Tan, design director of Designworx Interior Consultant. “The Wall could be placed at the reception counter, on a feature wall at a foyer or at the main lift lobby.”

Its modular design also means that several screens could be combined seamlessly vertically or horizontally in a number of compositions to create an awe-stopping digital installation at the lobby to welcome hotel guests. “With The Wall’s modular design, the possibility of customisation to create a bespoke installation art is exciting,” adds Tan.

A spectacular theatre in the suite of your dreams

The presidential suite remains the most exclusive accommodation type at hotels; with the spacious square footage and the finest facilities, the suite is often the crown jewel of the property. To up the experience of this plush environment, a private home theatre could be among the amenities of new hotels in the future.

Isabelle Miaja, founder of Miaja Design Group, considers the presidential suite of a hotel as one of the most suitable locations for a cinema-like environment. “A presidential suite with a large screen such as Samsung’s The Wall could enhance the experience of staying in the best accommodation the hotel offers—it perhaps could even include a personal theatre if the suite is big enough,” says Miaja.

The designer is currently considering this Samsung display for some of her upcoming projects. “At the moment I am introducing The Wall to a few residential clients and proposing it to some hotel developers,” she says. “I have personally experienced The Wall and it certainly was an impressive experience; it gives the feeling one is part of the picture or a movie. The sheer size is impressive as well and gives a theatre experience that few screens can match.”

Having a ball with immersive screens

Newlyweds-to-be could look forward to an elevated multimedia experience, with a statement screen at the heart of their venue on their big day. “Technology is being now put on the forefront of most gatherings and The Wall would certainly bring that wow factor to a ballroom event,” says Miaja.

An event space such as a grand ballroom would be the ideal space in terms of a vantage point to maximise the use of the large display; its streamlined design will make it a sleek addition to the venue. “You need the distance and a huge space to enjoy the viewing experience (with a large screen),” adds Miaja. “Designing with such a screen in a hotel environment can be a great luxury experience in itself and its thin profile helps keep it clean-lined on a wall.”

Making room for performance art

The sheer size of the screen also offers a spectacular opportunity for the broadcast of live performances and concerts held around the world—all the better to host virtual events with celebrities and talents worldwide.

“Contemporary hotel experiences focus on creating memorable moments,” says Terrence Quah, who co-founded Architology Interiors with Bu Shu Kun. “A digital wall-sized display provides the flexibility to create instant backdrops for anything from a band playing music in a lobby to a cultural performance.”

Digital souvenirs to keep

Additionally, Quah proposes the possibility of creating special digital mementos that guests can download, as showcased on the large screen; he sees it as an avenue that could support the work of emerging artists.

“Hotels can also provide for their guests royalty-free artworks displayed on these newly enabled digital walls, downloadable to their mobile phones like postcards of the past,” he muses. “Guests see the artwork displayed on a life-sized screen in the lobby and can also take it away with them digitally as a memento for their mobile phones, leaving an indelible impression of their time spent there.”
