Home Tour: Exotic Materials Make This Glamorous Home Truly Shine
When Spacedge Designs took on the redesign of this 10,200sqft family abode in the Bukit Timah district, it came with the most ambitious of goals—to transform a dated Neoclassical-style bungalow into a grand home for a multigenerational family of ten.
Led by designer William Chan, an award-winning designer known for his minimalist and unconventional design approach, the firm looked to create a “new look of modern luxury”, combining Chan’s clean-cut aesthetics with the client’s preference for palatial design.
Fittingly, the home’s entrance makes a memorable impression. The double solid Burmese teak doors exude a stately grandeur, along with a graphic motif inspired by Roman art, specially designed by Chan. The motif recurs through the home’s common areas, adding to the cohesiveness of its luxurious theme.
A palette of exotic, high-end materials plays up the resplendence: from polished marble surfaces, high-gloss wood finishes to the metal highlights. All of the furniture, lighting and soft furnishings were custom-made. Chan worked with a partner, Wendy Kho, for the FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment) portion of the project, which included customising the furniture, lighting, and soft furnishings throughout the entire home. “Creating shine was a key design principle,” says Chan, “I used exotic and high-end materials to make this home fit for a king.”

A floor-to-ceiling display commands the heart of the living room, separating the two sitting areas in this living space. Perfectly choreographed for dramatic effect, the polished shelving is matched by marble-clad walls overlaid with polished brass frames and Calacatta marble flooring.
4/6Height of Style
Leading up the second level and four bedrooms, the spiral staircase is a new, addition to the home. A 6.8 metre-long bespoke Swarovski crystal chandelier, which spans the double-volume void, punctuates the space.

5/6Lap of Luxury
The master bedroom—which includes a living and dressing area—pares back on the opulence for a more restful ambiance. Chan layers on inviting details, from glossy mahogany-panelled walls to 22K gold-leaf covered borders on the veneered walls. The ensuite bath is swathed in a golden hue, along with yellow onyx marble chosen by the owners.
6/6Made to Measure
A material palette of high-gloss wood finishes, mirrored metal strips and leather upholstery is applied consistently throughout the bedrooms. At the same time, each bedroom is subtly refined for each member of the family. The daughter’s bedroom (above) exudes a more earthy vibe with green accents, while the youngest son’s room (pictured below) features a masculine and monochromatic palette.
