One of the gems of the digital camera world, the famous Leica M, has been given a facelift by two of the world’s leading product designers: Jony Ive, of Apple, and Marc Newson.
The one-of-a-kind camera will be auctioned off in a special Sotheby's sale in New York on November 23 to benefit (RED), a non-profit group dedicated to raising funds and awareness in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
This exceptional camera, encased in aluminum, reportedly took a total of 85 days to produce, and the designers went through around a thousand prototype parts. A standard Leica M sells for around $7,000, but this unique version could bring a price of several times that figure at auction.
The (RED) auction, announced last month, will feature a variety of products designed or hand-selected by Newson and Ive for the cause. Among the items redesigned by the duo are a bottle of Dom Pérignon, a Steinway & Sons grand piano, and a set of Apple EarPod in-ear headphones finished in rose gold.
