Crestbrick is on a mission to help every homeowner find their dream abode

When Germaine Chow, CEO of Crestbrick, was in the UK property hunting with her husband Shawn Lee as well as her friends Benny Ong and Ivan Cai, they were vexed at how the majority of the agents they met were more interested in closing the deal rather than selling a home.

“My friends and I realised that no one does portfolio planning on a global level,” she shares. “When we came back to Singapore to look for homes locally, we found that most firms did not take a strategic approach to running their real estate agencies. Crestbrick is here to fill in the gaps with our Mars approach: our acronym for services that combine marketing, aesthetic staging, research and data, and strategic negotiation. These are very important pillars from a buyer’s perspective.”

Crestbrick was thus co-founded by the couple and their friends with a bold mission of “changing the lives of property owners”. It was a daring venture but one Chow deemed worthwhile, being guided throughout her life and career by the words of American self-help entrepreneur Anthony Robbins: “The path to success is to take massive, determined action”.

Today, Crestbrick also operates in the UK, New Zealand and Malaysia. We speak to Chow to learn more about the firm, and the business of buying and selling real estate.

Tell us more about the launch of Crestbrick.

Germaine Chow (GC) After working many different jobs, I realised I had a strong passion for business and loved building and executing my ideas. It’s a fact that purchasing a home isn’t easy, and there isn’t a manual on what buyers should look out for. So I created Crestbrick and real-estate investor club I Quadrant with my husband. I want to change the way people view property investment for the better, so they can make more informed decisions.

What is Crestbrick’s brand promise?

GC Every home has a story, and we are here to help you tell it. Whether it is a newly launched project or a resale home, we’ll market it for you as if it were brand new, complete with brochures, aesthetic staging, as well as keepsake photos and video. Our agency also takes a 360-degree approach which we call “sensory selling”.

We organise site visits to acclimatise a client to the property. What is the quantum and size compared to its surrounding data? What are some of the amenities around the property? We also consider the personal factors that would influence the buyers’ decisions: is the property near a reputable school, or close to where their relatives stay?

Crestbrick is here to fill in the gaps with our MARS approach: our acronym for services that combine marketing, aesthetic staging, research and data, and strategic negotiation.

—Germaine Chow, CEO of Crestbrick

How else does the company offer value to homeowners?

GC Some of our realtors are good at staging a home, others are great at research and managing portfolios. Based on their skillset, our associates are specially matched to clients according to their profile and preferences. Every client’s needs are also different. What is an investment to some may be a home to others.

What are some of your key projects in Singapore?

GC Among other properties, we’re currently in the midst of staging a high-floor studio unit at High Park Residences condominium before conducting viewings. This involves putting together a brochure with information and photos of its interior, facilities, location, amenities, potential rental yield and quantum—all the necessary information and more, on the true value of the property.

We’re curious about your own home. Could you share more about it?

GC My husband and I have just finished renovating our new house in Teachers’ Housing Estate, and we are looking to move in soon. I personally curated all the furnishings, which was really exciting.

I have always wanted to own a home large enough for my entire family—Shawn, myself, our children, my mum and my in-laws. I hope that our new abode will be a home where my mum and in-laws can retire and grow old in, living together all under one roof so that I can fulfill my dream of being a filial daughter. It feels great that my dream is coming true.

How has the pandemic impacted your business?

GC Crestbrick does 360-degree virtual tours as well. Therefore, when buyers come to the property, they have already seen it once, virtually. That said, such tours do not replace the sensory experience of viewing a place physically.

Before their visits, we will set up the space so that all of their five senses are engaged: we will ensure that the place is filled with ambient lights, nice scents, soothing music, and appealing visuals so that the potential buyer can move in to live almost immediately.
