A row of 19th-century shophouses has been given a new lease of life as Six Senses Duxton, thanks to the acclaimed designer.
Blakes London, Blakes Amsterdam, The Hempel… what do these award-winning boutique hotels have in common? They have all been owned, managed and designed by celebrated designer and hotelier Anouska Hempel, who has somehow managed to evoke the wonder and surprise of utopia without losing the cosiness of home with her eclectic east-meets-west style.
Her unique taste has translated into Six Senses Duxton—the hospitality and wellness company’s first city hotel that is nestled in the historic and vibrant neighbourhood in the Tanjong Pagar district of Singapore’s Chinatown.

Sustainably restored from eight 19th-century shophouses, the property doesn’t neglect their time-honoured heritage. Instead, it borrows elements from Chinese, Malay and European motifs, including neo-classical lion head motifs, Chinese porcelain-chip friezes with Malay timber fretwork, French windows, and Portuguese shutters, to create a contemporary space that is a nod towards Singapore’s past.
The hotel’s 49 guest rooms and suites are also categorised by eight locally and historically-inspired names, such as Nutmeg, Shophouse, Opium and Pearl, each boasting unique decor so that no two rooms are the same.
