Warm notes and rich tones help to create a stunning look in this strata semi-detached home designed by SuMisura.

The sumptuous and decadent feel of the entertainment area is achieved with the use of a muted and warm colour scheme.

When homeowner Ho purchased her new home at Palms @Sixth Avenue, a cluster house development in District 10 comprising 32 units of strata semi-detached homes, she envisioned an abode that was tastefully done and comfortable for herself, her husband and their three children. It also had to be a home that they would be proud to show off to family, friends and guests.

“We liked the showflats that were done by SuMisura and decided to engage them to design the interiors of our Palms @ Sixth Avenue home, as well as another property of ours,” says the businesswoman.

One of SuMisura’s design philosophies is to maximise a project’s design potential by exploring better alternative layouts so as to enhance the lives of its users. “Although some of the changes may require more time and budget, most homeowners go with our proposals when they understand the rationale behind them,” says Angela Lim, director at SuMisura, the luxury interior design division of the Numero Uno Creative Group.

In the case of Ho’s three-storey strata semi-detached home with a basement and roof terrace, the SuMisura team proposed that the original study in the basement be replaced by a formal dining area. Being Chinese, the family prefers a round dining table. The elongated plan of the original dining room located on the first storey with the living room could only accommodate a rectangular dining table. However, the square configuration in the basement made it ideal for an eight-seater round dining table.

“It is a most logical move. Not only does the family get the round dining table that they want, having the dining room in close proximity to the wet kitchen also means that food can be served quickly,” Lim explains. With the dining room relocated to the basement, the original dining and living area on the first storey is now a spacious entertainment area. The ambience here sets the tone for the rest of the abode, where interiors are shrouded in a warm glow through the use of soft lighting and an earthy palette. A column at one end of the wall has been designed as part of a feature wall that extends all the way to the main entrance.

Sights To Behold
Aptly named The Grand Hall, this new entertainment area, with its use of luxurious finishes such as brushed metal, high gloss spray paint, exotic timbers, velvet and suede, conveys an opulence that extends throughout the entire home.

The lavishness of the oversized bespoke rug in hand-tufted wool, the eight-seater sofa set with intricately-designed cushions, patterned soft furnishings and a baby grand piano make The Grand Hall the perfect spot for entertaining extended family and friends. A full-height mirror feature and a bespoke decorative ceiling light in brass gold above the baby grand set the stage for an enjoyable soiree. Having a dry kitchen adjacent to this entertainment area is extremely practical and the island counter also doubles up as an informal breakfast area for the family.

The master bedroom on the first storey has a bit of a surprise in store. Instead of the usual bed and headboard positioned against one wall of the room, Lim created what she refers to as an “island bed”, which allowed the team to incorporate an occasional study desk behind the bed. “Doing this also freed up the wall space behind the bed, which we designed as a feature storage cum wardrobe,” Lim elaborates.

One of the requirements in the homeowner’s brief was to have more storage space around the home so this addresses her needs. “This additional storage cum wardrobe is over and above the walk-in wardrobe provision in the existing plan,” Lim adds.

A second bedroom on the same floor has been converted into a home office to replace the original study in the basement. Being on the same floor as the bedroom, it feels like part of an extended master suite.

Charming Oasis
The swimming pool on the roof terrace has been replaced by a putting green and a lounge with outdoor seating and a swing. This was done according to Ho’s wishes. “The entire roof terrace has been turfed to give it a relaxed and cosy garden feel. Also, we needn’t bother with pool maintenance,” she says.

Ho credits Lim and the SuMisura team for their flair and input, which has made her home “very nice and well put together”. Her favourite space is the basement, which is where the family hangs out regularly in the evenings when they return from work.

“I have always regarded basements as dark and forgotten spaces. I never imagined that my basement would become one of my most loved areas within the home,” says Ho.
