With a carriage, a harpist, cherubs, love songs, and lots of laughter and some tears, the wedding of Putra Wijaya and Lilis Juliali had all the elements of a modern-day fairytale.

Just a day earlier, her boyfriend had left Singapore for Jakarta so Lilis Juliali must have thought she was dreaming when he turned up at the pool party she had organised for friends at her home. Putra Wijaya, owner of logistics company PT. Bumi Wijaya Indorail, had an even bigger surprise up his sleeve. Before all their friends, he presented Lilis with a brilliant custom-made diamond ring and 50 red roses before asking for her hand.

The pair had dated for about four years before this, but the beginnings of their relationship go back to their childhood. Having grown up in a small town in Indonesia, they attended the same primary school but it was only in Singapore that they were introduced to each other. It took six months of courtship before Lilis accepted Putra as her boyfriend.

Theme & Concept

Singapore is second home to the Indonesian-Chinese couple, so it was only natural for them to hold their wedding dinner here. The 27-year-old new bride shares, “Our parents live in Singapore. Plus, with guests coming from many different parts of the world, we felt it would be easier for everyone to gather here for a celebration.” Envisioning a grand celebration with royal undertones, Putra and Lilis started by looking for a venue that exuded elegance and class. They also had to make sure it could accommodate more than 50 tables for their long guest list. The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore fit the bill perfectly. Guests were greeted by a harpist strumming serene melodies at the foyer of the ballroom. Inside, it looked like a page out of a fairytale, complete with large golden sculptures of cupid, a fountain, a carriage and even a crown as part of the stage decoration. “We wanted a prince and princess kind of wedding. We also like the ancient Greek look with angels and so on, so the entire ballroom decoration reflected this,” reveals Lilis.

The bride’s outfits, complete with a tiara from Korea, echoed the royal splendour sentiment. Arm-in-arm with her husband who was dashing in a tailor-made Dior Homme suit, she stole the room’s attention in an Oscar De La Renta wedding gown as they made their march in. She reveals that her evening gown was particularly special. “I chose a design from Gladiolous Jakarta because it reminded me of the movie The Hunger Games. In it, actress Jennifer Lawrence wore a gown in a similar style, unique and sexy.”

The Highlights

When it came to the food, the couple went back to their roots with a traditional Chinese menu. Keeping the tempo up throughout dinner was the bilingual band A Little Dream. Guests were in for a treat with a star-studded entertainment line-up. The hosts for the evening were radio personalities Lin Pei Fen and Taiwanese celebrity Xiao Zhong. Putra’s parents chose Taiwanese artistes Cai Xing Juan and Weng Li You to provide the evening’s music. The pair crooned evergreen songs in Mandarin and Hokkien to the delight of many of the older couple’s friends among the guests.

Other entertainment included the morning express video, which the groom and his groomsmen put a great deal of effort into. It included stunning images from the newlyweds’ Chinese tea ceremony earlier that day as well as from their pre-wedding photo shoot in Amsterdam, Vienna and Jakarta.

As a token of appreciation, the lovebirds presented flowers to their parents. It was a touching moment that led to tear-streaked faces. Explaining the significance of this act, Lilis says, “It was a small gesture to thank them for raising us and giving us the best they could.”

There were lighthearted moments too, like when a tipsy Putra went on stage to give his speech. Laughing, Lilis shares that her husband, clearly unaware of what he was saying, kept repeating how much he loved his family and buddies, the guests, and even the wedding planner. A few expletives slipped in too, but no love was lost. Closing this fairytale celebration on a magical note was a dazzling light show, a fitting distraction as Lilis and her Prince Charming left to begin a new chapter of their lives.
