The updated 2019 Porsche Macan, like its larger stablemate, the Cayenne, is the complete sports car in the compact luxury SUV segment

Fresh from a makeover, it continues to set new benchmarks in the areas which are most important to driving enthusiasts – driving dynamics, design and driving pleasure.

While the new Macan has many attributes that make it a segment leader, there are five reasons why it must be at the top of the list of any would-be buyer.

1. A Powerful Engine

The new Macan S is propelled by a new 3-litre V6 engine which was first seen in the Panamera. With 14 hp more than its predecessor, it develops 354 hp and maximum torque of 480 Nm. The key feature of this engine is the mono turbocharger located between the inner “V”. With shorter exhaust gas paths between the combustion chambers and the turbocharger, the result is outstanding and immediate responsiveness. Put pedal to the metal and the 0 to 100 km/h dash is dispatched in 5.1 seconds and while top speed is 254 km/h (with Sport Chrono Package).

Not to be outdone, the new Macan’s turbocharged 2-litre 4-cylinder engine, with its boost pressure of one bar, charge air cooling, direct injection and variable valve timing, churns out a healthy 252 hp and 370 Nm – good enough for hot hatch-beating performance figures of 6.5 seconds (with Sport Chrono Package) for the century sprint and 227 km/h maximum speed.

2. Sportier Sport Chrono Package

Like in the iconic sports car, the 911, the new Macan’s Sport Chrono Package is equipped with a mode switch that is integrated in the steering wheel. Depending on driving requirements, choose Normal, Sport, Sport Plus or the new Individual mode. As its name implies, Individual allows the driver to customise and store an individual setup and activate it via the mode switch.

If immediate, superlative performance is needed at any time, depress the Sport Response button in the middle of the mode switch and 20 seconds of maximum performance is available. Perfect for swift overtaking!

3. Signature LED Lighting

The headlights of the new Macan have been completely redesigned and feature the latest LED technology. With a central 25-watt LED module for main and dipped beam that is supported by four additional modules, the headlights are effective as they are eye-catching. The four LED units arranged in a square around the central module form the four-point daytime running lights synonymous with Porsche.

At the rear of the new Macan, a signature Porsche design element has been added with the three-part, three-dimensional LED light panel. Connecting the two LED tail lights, the panel is also adorned with the three-dimensional “PORSCHE” logo. In the day, these rear LED components are simply gorgeous. And when the lights go out, they are stunning!

4. Larger And Upgraded PCM

Technology in the new Macan is top notch, thanks to the enhanced Porsche Communication Management (PCM). Accessed via the full-HD touchscreen, which has increased in size from 7.2 to 10.9 inches, there are also lesser buttons, thanks to the new interface, and like on the Panamera and Cayenne, the home screen can be easily personalised with predefined tiles.

The new PCM also features two USB ports and SD card slot (both in the storage compartment of the centre console) and Apple CarPlay (optional).

5. Improved Driving Dynamics

With a chassis that is typical of sports cars—not SUVs, the new Macan is the optimum blend of unique lateral dynamics and everyday comfort.

On the front axle, spring forks made of aluminium save 1.5 kg over the previous steel components and are more rigid as well. As a result, the Macan steers more accurately while the suspension is more comfortable.

The anti-roll bars have been tuned for more neutral handling while the narrower rim width of the front wheels (by half an inch) enables the front tyres to be guided more precisely and with improved turn-in.

Brake response is more immediate, thanks to the new brake pedal. Made of moulded, glass fibre-reinforced thermoplastic sheet material, it is 300 g lighter than the steel unit it replaces. It also acts on the brake master cylinder via a shorter level arm. The front brake discs of the Macan S have also grown by 10 mm (to 360 mm).
