In its 150 years of fine furniture making, Walter Knoll has not only produced quality products but has also created countless designs that have defined the styles of homes, offices, as well as public and retail spaces.

Founded in 1865 by Wilhelm Knoll, Walter Knoll began as a leather furnishing company and was a supplier to the royal court. Knoll’s sons — Willy and Walter — took over the family business in 1907 and started producing chairs that furnished aircrafts and airships in the 1920s. After World War II, the innovative company continued to break design boundaries by unveiling modern models that drive buyers into the next decade of contemporary living.

Fast forward to 1993, the Benz family bought over the Walter Knoll company and since then, CEO Markus Benz has been in charge of the brand’s expansion into various cities including London, Paris, Mumbai and Beijing.

Marking its long history in crafting chairs that hold a timeless appeal, the Walter Knoll unveils its Classic Edition collection. As the name suggests, the range includes eight perennial favourites, including the 1949 Vostra chair. Commenting on the Classic Edition range, Benz says, “[It is] an invitation to become acquainted with new-born classics and rediscover familiar favourites — all with their very own story.”

Key Designs from Walter Knoll’s Classic Edition

Designed by the Walter Knoll team, the 369 armchair, introduced in 1956, stood out with its use of new materials, the introduction of plastic and its smooth curves. It even scored praises at the Cologne Furniture Fair, further asserting Walter Knoll’s innovative spirit.

Haussmann.jpg

Haussmann 310 — a 1962 creation — is the brainchild of Swiss architects and designers Trix and Robert Haussmann. To retain the elegance of the classic Chesterfield, the duo opted for the traditional upholstering technique of button tufting to create diamond-like patterns. This was contrasted by slim legs that contributed an overall lighter feel. The Haussmann 310 also reflected the pair’s forward thinking approach in furniture design.

After the war, Walter Knoll knew that people needed to be reawakened and life had to proceed. His son Hans Knoll supported him and introduced an upholstered version of the Vostra armchair, designed by Jens Risom. The simple yet stylish design represented the start of a modern post-war lifestyle.

Fabricius.jpg

Preben Fabricius, the designer behind the Fabricius chair, melded Scandinavian design philosophy with functionality to create a contemporary chair made for casual lounging in living rooms, lounges, lobbies and even design museums. It never fails to elevate the style of a room — whether it’s placed in pairs or individually.
