A two-decade-old apartment in Singapore receives a remarkable transformation by TDC & Associates, becoming an elegant, intimate and serene oasis for a couple

“The ability of the user to interact with an interior is of primary importance; better still when the interior can help to improve the owners’ well-being, especially after a tiring day,” says LH Chan, principal designer of TDC & Associates.

“The user-friendliness of a space is important because the interior is a living hub and not a cold display piece. A beautiful interior is only the by-product.” All these qualities and more are embodied in the projects by the local firm, which is known for crafting impeccably elegant and timeless abodes in Singapore, Shanghai, and beyond.

This beautiful apartment in Singapore’s East Coast neighbourhood is a prime example. The owners, who work in the financial industry, chanced upon the exquisite work of the design firm in a magazine and loved what they saw, so they hired the firm to transform the interior of their four-bedroom apartment.

The 1,600 sq ft unit offers soothing sea views from the living room and master bedroom, and is within walking distance of East Coast Park. However, the home was already 20 years old. The kitchen was run down, and the windowless bathrooms were dark and gloomy.

A dramatic makeover was needed to create a relaxing and stylish interior that the couple would be proud to show off to guests during their frequent gatherings. The kitchen was of importance as well, as the wife enjoys cooking and baking. TDC & Associates rose to the challenge to create an interior that achieves style and function with equal aplomb; much consideration was given to how the owners would use the space.

Upon entering the abode, the open-plan dining zone is the first space visitors will encounter. Here, a photorealistic artwork is a focal point. It’s complemented by a row of pendant lights that floats gracefully above the Cattelan Italia Stratos Keramik dining table from Royal Interiors. The dining bench was specially customised to match the table, and is also upholstered in the same light grey fabric used on the dining chairs.

The most eye-catching element of the home is still the unmissable ocean views. The furnishings in the living area are deliberately kept understated to draw attention to the scenery outdoors. “The colour, texture and print of the upholstery fabric for the Minotti sofas were specially curated for the living room. We made three trips to the Minotti showroom in order to get the cushion sizes and fabric choices exactly right,” says Chan.

Adds the designer: “Where the linework is, the eye will follow. The slim lines of the dark wood wall panels and the Meridiani Teresa armchair help to enhance the aesthetics of the space and promote the airy feel of the living area.” A coffee table with a Calacatta marble top was also made bespoke, specially selected to feature the right hue and veining to match the living space.

To the right of the dining area is the kitchen, which features white glazed porcelain floor tiles with a pattern inspired by Calacatta marble. The existing timber door was replaced by a tempered glass door to bring more daylight into the space. Ample dark wood shelving ensures that the wife has adequate storage for all her culinary tools, appliances and ingredients. “Various shades of dark colours and textures add further depth and sophistication to the kitchen,” explains the designer.

The sea-facing master bedroom also received a remarkable transformation. Aside from its elegant appearance, thought was given to how the interior would endure the bright, humid conditions of Singapore’s tropical climate; the dark veneer wall behind the bed, for instance, has been UV-coated to prevent discolouration from sunlight. The TV feature wall also conceals the wiring, contributing to the interior’s sleek look.

The bathroom received a complete overhaul; the existing dark marble flooring was replaced by white porcelain tiles on the walls and floor. “With its white colour and glossy surface, the tiles reflect nearly all of the light that they receive, which helps to brighten the bathroom and give it an airy feel,” says Chan. LED lighting strips are incorporated above and beneath the mirror and wall-hung cabinet; a night light was also installed to provide more gentle illumination when the space is used at night.

The open-plan living and dining areas were the most challenging aspect of this seven-month project due to the spatial planning required to fulfil the owners’ entertaining needs. The renovation made it the most important space of the home, and also the area the owners adore the most, whether they’re hanging out with their friends or as a couple.

“We achieved more than the owners had planned for; the husband told us that their home turned out even better than expected,” says the designer with pride. “We are grateful for their unwavering faith and belief in us; it empowered us to do our best.”
