Replete with warm hues and textural touches, this revitalised apartment is an airy sanctuary that fosters feelings of serenity

Giving your abode a fresh new look not only elevates the aesthetics of your environment but also imparts deeper benefits such as lifting your mood and even increasing your creativity. The considered application of elements such as natural light, soothing hues and the right furnishings can boost one’s mental and physical well-being, resulting in happier homeowners buoyed by feelings of positivity.

The occupants of this 3,000 sq ft apartment at The Marq on Paterson Hill in Singapore’s prestigious District 9 are a couple with three children; they had sought to reinvigorate their home with a new design, functional touches, and practical changes. “The apartment was in its original condition since the development was launched, and was tired and worn,” explains Adrian Ong, founder and principal of Anthracyte Studio, the interior design firm tasked with the project.

Both the designer and the homeowners agreed on an understated yet elegant scheme and overall lighter palette to imbue the four-bedroom home with renewed vigour, augmented by additions that lend warmth and tactility. These take the form of wallcoverings, metal trims, subtly patterned soft furnishings, crown-cut timber veneer with a satin finish, stone varieties such as travertine, and veined marble on furniture and feature elements, which also add a modern classical bent to the abode’s various spaces.

Artwork is placed throughout the apartment, lending energising pops of colour and visual interest. Luminaires from Delta Light and Lutron integrated lighting controls set the degree of illumination and the appropriate ambience.

Sunlight filters in through diaphanous, full-height curtains to suffuse the entire abode with an ethereal glow, making it appear open and spacious, yet infinitely snug, at the same time. In the double-volume living room, commodious sofas from Poliform beg to be lounged on, beckoning with their plush forms. Other pieces, such as the Eames walnut stools, Flos Taccia lamp, an ebony-hued piano and rustic earthen vessels catch the eye with their sculptural shapes and striking tones in this largely neutral space. “Every piece of lighting and furniture, down to the decorative ceramics, had to follow the same sense of proportion, warmth and finishing,” says Ong of his efforts in arranging a tuneful composition for this residence.

A double-volume wall clad in a tinted mirror surface and a column sporting a decorative stucco-like paint add texture; the latter also serves as an “understated classical reference to columns in an ancient classical building,” states Ong. Overhead, globular Bocci 28 Series pendant lamps cascade in a captivating arrangement; they are reflected in the tinted mirror wall when illuminated in the evenings to create the effect of a starry night sky. “We worked closely with the installer to get the right splay for the space,” says Ong of the pendant arrangement.

From the living room, a corridor wall that stretches to the master bedroom was jazzed up with panels clad in Jim Thompson wallpaper, warm-hued coated aluminium doors and door portals, and aluminium trims. The metal trims and panels serve to break up the expanse of the wall, which itself encapsulates Anthracyte Studio’s design approach. “[The wall] effectively sets the design tone for the whole home, and is a feature that can be appreciated in the key spaces of the apartment,” says Ong.

The adjoining dining area also sports a paint with a stucco-like finish on the ceiling, along with the Mayfair dining table and a textural rug from Molteni&C, a Louis Poulsen PH Artichoke pendant lamp, and an Asian-themed artwork with vibrant blue tones. It is an inviting space tailored for memorable mealtimes with friends or family. Just behind the dining area is the kitchen, a compact yet functional area with a Dada kitchen counter and system, fittings from Gessi and Foster, and appliances from V-Zug. Two Louis Poulsen PH 3/3 pendant lamps add a burnished edge, while the installation of a pocket door visually expands its dimensions.

Of the home’s private zones, one bedroom was converted to a lounge, complete with a study. The children’s bedrooms were given new built-in desks and crown-cut golden teak veneer doors; the same timber graces the master bedroom in the form of slatted walls and panels behind the headboard. The master bedroom is a restful sanctuary awash in neutral hues and silk wallpaper, featuring a Molteni&C bed, side tables and console, and a vanity with an antique finish. The ensuite bathroom embodies good looks and functionality with its white quartz tub, Arabescato marble vanity, and Vola fittings.

The project was completed in a little over three months, resulting in a rejuvenating home that creates a sense of comfort and peace. “The colours and the textures of the materials, fixtures and furnishings create a sanctuary with the right sensory balance and a sense of calm that works well on an everyday basis and when the family entertain guests,” says Ong. “We are still adding furniture and decorative items to meet the owners’ evolving needs.”
