Pared-back and refined, these furniture brands offer design reduced to its most essential without compromising on warmth

Minimalist homes aim to create a feeling of zen and a sense of ease and tranquillity. The pieces used to create these restorative spaces are typically quietly beautiful with clean lines and natural materials.

We've identified five brands that best embody this minimalist aesthetic

1. Gubi

Tatler Asia

Founded in Copenhagen in 1967 by Gubi and Lisbeth Olsen, the husband-and-wife duo initially began Gubi to showcase their textile catalogue and produce their own postmodern furniture designs.

Since then, the brand has grown into a Danish design house with global influence particularly after their sons opened a concept store and introduced fashion into the equation.

Today, Gubi works with renowned designers like Space Copenhagen and Gamfratesi to continue its instantly recognisable aesthetic of simple, arresting shapes while celebrating archival work from greats like Pierre Paulin and Gio Ponti.

Its extensive range of furniture, lighting and interior objects are created using the world’s most innovative manufacturing techniques.

Despite being relatively new on the scene, Mette and Rolf Hay, the creators of the Danish brand Hay, have conquered the design world in just a decade. Founded in Copenhagen in 2002, Hay's products are characterised by innovativeness, bold designs and high quality industrial manufacturing.

Priced competitively, Hay's furniture, lighting and interior products are easily accessible to large audiences with pieces like the Woody shelving system and Tray table becoming iconic pieces of modern Scandinavian design.

While the brand's offerings sport simple lines, these designs are often ingenious, surprising and the result of working with an impressive list of established and up and coming designers. Rolf puts it best: "We want to make products that people hopefully form an emotional bond with and that they truly care about.”

Finnish architect Alvar Aalto was famous for many things - inventor of bent plywood furniture, pioneer of modern architecture and not least, co-founding Artek in 935 with his wife Aino, along with fellow idealists Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl.

Its name is a portmanteau of ‘art’ and ‘technology’ which the founders aimed to unite in their products and promote a modern culture of living.

Opening its first store in 1936, Artek’s original showroom in Finland exhibited a unique curation of inspirational objects, from both its own collection and that of like-minded brands. Today, Artek's products continue to find their place in homes and have become icons of modern design in their own right like Alto's functionalist Stool 60 and Chair 611 with its recognisable webbing.
