Finnish architect Alvar Aalto was famous for many things - inventor of bent plywood furniture, pioneer of modern architecture and not least, co-founding Artek in 935 with his wife Aino, along with fellow idealists Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl.

Its name is a portmanteau of ‘art’ and ‘technology’ which the founders aimed to unite in their products and promote a modern culture of living.

Opening its first store in 1936, Artek’s original showroom in Finland exhibited a unique curation of inspirational objects, from both its own collection and that of like-minded brands.
