After months spent in lockdown, it comes as little surprise that bar cabinets are the latest staple in interiors. Fashion finds another foothold in Milan Design Week at Italian luxury shoe and leather maker Tod’s. Over at its flagship store, the brand worked with New Jersey-based contemporary artist and sculptor Willie Cole to create sculptures using leftover materials from Tod’s production line. Cole, known for his innovative works that features commonly discarded domestic items like irons and high-heeled shoes, created chairs, sofas and a sculpture for the exhibition by using the uppers of the brand’s iconic driving shoes. To accompany Cole’s sculptural creations, the brand has also launched a limited-edition sustainable-driven Mosaic collection, where the products are made from leftover materials from its main collections.

Bold patterns and prints take the centre stage of Versace Home’s latest collection. The Italian luxury house has never been one to shy away from maximalist style, and the new collection is a testament to that. Created by Donatella Versace in collaboration with Italian design duo Roberto Palomba and Ludovica Serafini, the collection references classical art as well as Greek mythology to produce eclectic decor that encourages non-conformism.

Featuring a mixture of luxurious materials like leather, silk and marble, the furnishings showcase geometric lines and colour blocking. The brand’s new La Greca pattern, which first appeared on Versace’s Fall 2021 fashion collection, also makes an appearance, alongside their signature Medusa, Barocco and Trésor de la Mer motifs.

Giorgio Armani turns to natural elements to create the latest collection for Armani/Casa—the designer looks to bring the outdoors in with a series of furnishings that feature animal prints, natural textures, and a colour palette consisting of oceanic blues and earthy tones.

As part of the new collection, the luxury maison has also debuted Royal, a limited-edition bar cabinet that’s available in only 88 pieces. The large cylindrical structure also features the use of Japanese tatami-style paper and cotton—a nod to the designer’s fascination with the Eastern cultures.

Virgil Abloh’s luxury streetwear label Off-White has collaborated with Italian tableware maestro Ginori 1735 for a limited-edition collection. Unveiled during Milan Design Week, the chic tableware pieces are designed for a “modern dining room”. The collection marries Off-White’s edgy streetwear culture with Ginori 1735’s excellent craftsmanship by superimposing the fashion label’s iconic motifs on the late-baroque Florentine silverware.

Based on the traditional shape of the Italian porcelain brand’s Antico Doccia collection, which has been used since the 18th century and can be distinguished by its curved edges, the modern pieces with their simplified black-and-white colour palette will add extra style to beautiful tablescapes.

Dior’s Louis XVI-style Medallion chair, an iconic piece to the French fashion house since its inception in 1947, has been completely reimagined for this year’s Milan Design Week. The oval-back chair was first introduced by Christian Dior, who was working with decorator Victor Grandpierre, to accommodate guests in his couture salons and fashion shows. As recounted in his memoirs, the chair was beloved by the designer for its neoclassical style that was “sober, simple, and above all classic and Parisian”.  

Specially for Milan Design Week year, the luxury fashion house has tapped 17 artists and designers the likes of Nendo, Pierre Yovanavich and India Mahdavi to put their personal spin on the house’s signature chair for a special exhibition. The designers were free to express their own take on the chair; Nendo, for example, used two sheets of tempered glass to form a modern reinterpretation, while Yovanavich designed for a his-and-hers pair that are upholstered in a fabric that features Dior’s signature logo as a recurring pattern.

During the last Milan Design Week in 2019, Gucci's pop-up boutique was among the playful highlights in the city. This year, the Italian fashion house has also created a pop-up store that references the work-from-home culture. Combining the look of a whimsical library and Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele’s take on a traditional Italian stationery shop, the pop-up store features an assortment of stationery and homeware goods, including notebooks, letter cases, and glass-domed paperweights.
