Celebrities that go beyond just picking and choosing from available home pieces

A creative collaboration we are seeing increasingly these days is celebrities working with home designers and architects to create a place they can call home. One that’s particularly mould and shaped to the person and family’s personalities or trades, and which may not fit another if they were to walk through the meticulously curated rooms.

While some celebrities engage with interior designers to put together their homes and hearth, some go above and beyond to try their hands at creating furniture pieces, even all-encompassing home collections that reflect their styles and preferences.

Here are some that prove that these celebrities may just have a chance in moonlighting as a home or furniture designer.

Pharrell Williams has already collaborated with various musicians, artists, designers and brands before he was appointed artistic director for Louis Vuitton’s menswear earlier this year. From fashion partnerships with adidas and Comme des Garçons to music collaborations with Justin Timberlake and Yuna, it shouldn’t be surprising that there is also a furniture design effort in his multi-faceted list of projects.

The Perspective chair series was a 2008 collaborative debut between the creative icon and Parisian studio and atelier Domeau & Pérès, founded by Les Compagnons du Devoir graduates Bruno Domeau and Philippe Pérès. A “homage to the Eames structure,” the chairs feature metal legs and feet in the shape of a man’s and a woman’s pairs of legs, with seatings that echo the ’50s industrial icon’s aesthetic notes.

“I had often wondered what it’s like to truly be in love, not lust for once,” explains Williams, whose creation was available in red, black, turquoise and yellow. “So, I decided not to ask what it was like in someone else’s shoes, or what it was like to sit in their seat. I decided to sketch out my own experiment—a representation of ‘the love between a woman and a man’.”

So inspired was he that year when it came to industrial design that he followed up the Perspective chair with The Tank: another chair series with leather seating and plexiglass legs shaped as tank tracks in honour of enlisted soldiers fighting for home and country.

The “meet cute” for the Pitt-Pollaro furniture collection between Brad Pitt and Frank Pollaro happened when, in 2008, the bespoke furniture maker personally delivered a commissioned Art Deco-styled custom desk to the Babylon star at his Southern France chateau, a birthday gift for his then wife, Angelina Jolie. Pollaro noticed Pitt’s sketchbook was filled with furniture sketches from the last 10 years, prompting both parties to work together to bring the drawings to life.

Reflecting their shared passion for modern furniture design and craftsmanship, the Pitt-Pollaro collection took four years to develop, resulting in 12 limited-edition pieces that include a swanky, Bauhaus-inspired dining table with a glass top and a geometric metal base you might find in Mad Men Don Draper’s apartment.

“The design development process was exhaustive, and Brad insisted on being intimately involved in every step of the process, each piece taking at least six months to create. He would not settle until each piece was exactly as he envisioned,” recalls Pollaro, dubbing the Hollywood star a “true luxury furniture designer.”

Lenny Kravitz is another multidisciplinary creative who has dabbled in furniture design in the last decade or two. Under his conceptual creative studio, Kravitz Design, the Grammy-winning rockstar and actor has worked with Leica for his love of photography and Steinway for his love for music. His 2003 and 2015 collaborations with CB2, a “luxe for all” luxury furniture and décor brand, are adding to his growing portfolio.

The 2015 collection drew inspiration from the European ateliers, the colourful markets of Africa and beyond, featuring industrial and rustic design peppered with rich, African-inspired heritage textiles that transpire “the soul of a nomad.”

The floating platform bed is the best example of the collection’s design theme. With an African-inspired print for the frame, the bent polished nickel railing reiterates silhouettes from the ’60s and ’70s, creating a more modernised profile as it embraces the frame up the sides and around the back.

“Home should be a place where you feel like yourself and your spirit is comfortable. We want you to walk into a space and feel comfortable and inspired,” Kravitz explains. “Based on a mélange of places, things and people I’ve encountered through my travels, the collection is a homage to the journeys that I have taken and the people, places and objects that have inspired me along the way.”

Another celebrity who has worked with Crate & Barrel’s sister brand is the “actress turned wellness and lifestyle brand owner,” Gwyneth Paltrow, whose CB2 collaboration emits a more transitional, contemporary chic connotation compared to Kravitz’s.

The 2018 goop x CB2 collection featured a limited edition shearling swivel chair with sustainably sourced shearling and an eco-friendly, FSC-certified frame; “proof that things don’t have to be cold and hard to be chic,” quips Paltrow.

While the statement piece has since sold out (only 40 pieces were made), an iteration of the swivel chair in ivory bouclé takes the former’s place, persisting with the elegant design that is “slightly vintage with a mod silhouette.”

“Our priority was to nail this juxtaposition of functionality and elegance, taking the compromise out of the equation with chic furniture that’s to be lived in and loved,” Paltrow clarifies. “The result: uniquely layered furniture and décor made with love and an almost obsessive attention to quality.”

Robert Pattinson is the latest to join the handful of celebrities in furniture design. The Batman star and latest face of Dior’s campaign engaged with Santa Monica-based designer Nicole Gordon again. This time, for a sofa “where you could nestle in to read, but was also sturdy and stable enough for a number of people to sit on at a party.”

The end result is a contour-shaped three-seater, with appendages that can be extended out on either side during private hosting events, equipped with pink onyx drink trays on either arm rest, matching the stone slab for the base that serves as a contrast to the linen velvet material of the lobe-shaped sofa.

“The most challenging technical part was engineering it so it could actually support people, and wouldn’t topple over,” recalls Gordon, who previously designed two of Pattinson’s homes, as well as his parents in London. “So, we built this metal frame inside the carcass of the sofa that lets you put 350 pounds on each of those ‘floating’ arms.”
