Karen Tan sees beauty even in spaces that are old and rundown. That is why she set up Pocket Projects “to reimagine and transform derelict spaces into meaningful developments that bring people back into them”. This was also the reason why The Projector was born, as the 37-year-old and her two co‑founders revived parts of the historic Golden Theatre at the Golden Mile Tower and turned it into an independent cinema and creative space. For Karen, the establishment, which has hosted myriad activities from town halls by banks to international film festivals, “holds space for dialogue through events, art, cultural gigs and experimentation”.
