Speaking with Anthony Chen, you get the sense that the film-maker spends a lot of time contemplating the human condition. He says, “I hope my films will be able to stand the test of time and continue to speak to people beyond its time. Money doesn’t make a good film; it’s heart, lots of it.” We reckon it’s this heartfelt sincerity that led to the runaway success of Anthony’s films. His first feature film Ilo Ilo debuted at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and was unanimously awarded the Camera d’Or, making history as the first Singapore feature to be awarded at Cannes. In that same year, Ilo Ilo went on to sweep up 40 awards internationally.
