The screening of the film, which is titled “The Breaking Ice”, marks the filmmaker and screenwriter’s fourth outing at the prestigious film festival

Singaporean director Anthony Chen will debut his latest film, The Breaking Ice, at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

The movie will premiere in the Un Certain Regard section, highlighting emerging art-house directors and daring films. The film stars Chinese actors Zhou Dongyu, Liu Haoran and Qu Chuxiao.

The Breaking Ice is the Chen’s fourth film to be showcased at Cannes. The film’s premiere coincides with the 10th anniversary of the director’s debut film Ilo Ilo, which won the festival’s Camera d’Or for best debut feature in 2013.

Written and directed by Chen, The Breaking Ice follows the relationships of three young adults over a few short days in the winter snow. It is also Chen’s first mainland Chinese feature.

In addition to Cannes, the Beijing International Film Festival will dedicate a section to Chen’s films and the recent movie Ajoomma, which starred Singaporean actress Hong Huifang and was nominated for four Golden Horse Awards.

Chen also premiered his first English-language film, Drift, to critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2023.
