Unearth’s Johnson Goh shares his unconventional path to entrepreneurship and his present-day mission to curb furniture waste from filling up landfills

Disposing of unwanted furniture and household items can be a hassle, whether you’re trying to sell them or arrange for someone to pick them up. Johnson Goh and his co-founder Eric Lee aim to solve this problem with their startup, Unearth, which focuses on reducing furniture waste through sustainable practices.

Goh’s journey in the startup industry began during the Covid-19 pandemic. He found that selling secondhand items online was difficult and time-consuming. Goh and Lee offered to help their friends sell their unwanted items online, and they discovered that they could actually make a living from selling secondhand goods. But the difficulty was to sell a wide range of items.

Their breakthrough came when they helped a friend sell a large volume of furniture intended initially for furnishing service apartments. It was a challenge, but the experience led them to focus on selling furniture online as they identified it as a significant pain point for many people.

Goh and Lee share more about their business and plans for the future.

How is business throughout the year and where do you source for your furniture?

Johnson Goh (JG): Our sales have no seasonality because demand remains constant throughout the year. Occasionally, we notice spikes in sales volume during the festive seasons like Hari Raya. The good news is there are always people who want to dispose of their old items and who want to buy new furniture. Our approach is to establish multiple channels for sourcing furniture.

How do you track all the items you collect and store in your factory?

JG: Keeping track of inventory is a significant challenge for us. So our collection workers document every item they bring back and input it into the system. Once the items are brought back, we have a sorting department that organises them. We have a tracking system that helps us to track where each item is located in the warehouse. We also have a QR code on every pillar in our warehouse that our workers scan to locate the items that customers want.

What have been some of the biggest lessons you’ve gained in your founder journey?

JG: Being an entrepreneur is tough, but I have learned that accounting for as many potential problems as possible and having a plan for each one can increase your chances of success.

Another important lesson we learned was to recognise when it is time to change course. During the early days of our startup, we expanded our fleet of lorries too quickly, negatively impacting the business. We realised this mistake early and took a step back to reassess things. We scaled down operations and focused on bringing the company to profitability.

What’s in the pipeline for Unearth?

JG: We plan to expand to the state of Johor to tap into the Singaporean market for an additional supply of items. We are also exploring ways to diversify our furniture supply, including collaborating with furniture companies to receive overstocked or outdated pieces that their customers have disposed of.

Unearth is positioning itself as an enabler for companies to improve their ESG ratings by tracking items and reporting them back to them. We anticipate seeing growth in ESG in furniture companies over the next two to three years.
