Meet the young leaders from the Tatler Gen.T List who are improving and saving lives with cutting-edge technologies, treatments and healthcare solutions

The last three years have highlighted the importance of a nation’s healthcare system—and how its resilience, efficiency and effectiveness can have profound impacts on economic development, social stability and overall human potential.

While the Covid-19 pandemic may have been a “black swan” event, a rare and unexpected event that placed enormous pressure on healthcare systems globally, experts warn that nations can no longer afford to revert to pre-pandemic approaches to healthcare.

As demand across Asia evolves, innovations in this sector are expected to keep up. In this year’s Tatler Gen.T List 2023, several honourees showcase an unwavering commitment to improving and saving lives using technology, design and other smart solutions. From creating sensors to detect viruses to developing a comprehensive digital health platform to boost access to care in society, here are some of the Gen.T honourees to know contributing to the advancement of Asia’s healthcare industry.

Poh Yun Ru

Designer, NUS Design Incubation Centre

People with dementia often lose basic life skills. But Poh Yun Ru’s Rewind, a cognitive stimulation therapy tool, is turning back the clock and effectively giving them precious time back. Rewind uses visual aids, motion-tracking tools and sensory cues to spur memory, so patients can relearn how to perform essential tasks such as making tea, watering plants and walking their dogs. It won the 2022 Grand Prix at Lexus Design Award and iF Design Award.

Ray Chiu

Co-founder and CEO, Calyx

A series of deadly gas explosions in Kaohsiung in 2014 spurred Ray Chiu to develop smart bio-sensory applications that detect complex gases accurately in real time. Armed with a background in biochemical engineering, Ray co-founded Calyx and went on to develop sensors that detect the presence of bacteriophages, the viruses that live in bacteria. These sensors enhance health and safety standards in various industries—from agriculture to manufacturing and aviation.

Farouk Meralli

Founder and CEO, SwipeRx

Founded in 2014 by Farouk Meralli, SwipeRx connects more than 50,000 pharmacies and 250,000 industry professionals across Southeast Asia. Along with B2B commerce services, the company provides users with information to better manage pharmacies, as well as works with pharma companies, governments and NGOs. Its latest raise was $37 million in Series B funding from investors including pharmaceutical giants Sanofi and Johnson & Johnson, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Shekhar Ramjutun

Co-founder and COO, Doc2Us

Shekhar Ramjutun co-founded digital health platform and e-prescription issuer, Doc2Us to address Malaysia’s low doctor-to-population ratio. The company connects more people with healthcare professionals increasing access for the wider community. The company has become the country’s largest provider, with more than 1,500 pharmacy partners and over a million electronic prescriptions issued. In 2022, it formed a partnership with genetic testing company SuperDNA to provide preventive healthcare.

Minnie Pangilinan

Co-inventor, Brakong and designer, SIBOL

Along with her co-inventor and fellow Gen.T honouree, Jason Pechardo, at the Surgical Innovations and Biotechnology Laboratory (SIBOL), Minnie Pangilinan is empowering breast cancer survivors with her innovative breast prosthesis, Brakong. Made from antimicrobial native plant bakong, the product is both comfortable to wear and being bio-based, environmentally friendly. The prosthesis also addresses the emotional needs of survivors. It received the national James Dyson Award in 2022.

Raya Chantaramungkorn

Co-founder and CMO, HonestDocs

HonestDocs was co-founded in 2017 by Raya Chantaramungkorn as the first and largest healthcare marketplace in Thailand. Since then, HonestDocs has grown to be a digital hub for all things healthcare-related. A booking platform for health and beauty services, as well as a virtual pharmacy, it launched a service called HDcare in 2022 to connect patients with surgeons and underused operating rooms in private hospitals. In 2023, HonestDocs was inducted into the Google for Startups Accelerator programme.

Jonathan Ng

Founder and CEO, Iterative Health

With Iterative Health, Jonathan Ng is working to transform gastrointestinal healthcare, using AI to improve diagnosis by creating complex endoscopic videos. The company also has a database to screen patients suitable for clinical trials. It has raised more than $195 million from healthcare players including Johnson & Johnson and Eli Lilly, and VCs including Insight Partners, Breyer Capital and Alumni Ventures.
