Whatever the Rice Ball’s theme, glamour is always guaranteed. The 14th edition of the annual charity gala by theatre company Wild Rice in October revived the exuberant spirit of 1960s Singapore, putting a nostalgic spin to what it was like living in a burgeoning nation then known as the Hollywood of the East. Guests played their part by decking out in bright minidresses and geometric-patterned outfits. Wild Rice’s founding artistic director Ivan Heng and associate artistic director Glen Goei crafted a fun line-up of skits, dance and singing performances featuring the likes of theatre mavens Judee Tan and Pam Oei. The stage acts went from replicating the forgotten decadence of Singapore’s nightlife to honouring legends such as The Beatles and Malay entertainment icon P Ramlee. DJ Keith Colaco capped off the evening with groovy tunes by The Rolling Stones and The Supremes.
