Only a handful of galas in Singapore can boast of a guest list that is versatile (and sporting) enough to rock up fully dressed as plundering pirates in one year, and Italian gangsters in the next. And one of them is the Kidz Horizon Appeal gala dinner. With the theme “comic characters unite”, this year’s gala saw a gathering of the beautifully weird, from Supermen, to Spidermen, to plain ol’ X-men. Right from the moment an opera-singing “creature” opened the gala at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, the ballroom teemed with laughing and dancing mutants who imbibed a strange planetary juice that seemed to make them happier as the night drew on. In the end, Singapore Tatler stole the show through Fashion Director Desmond Lim, who won Best Dressed (male) as Mystique – a transformation that required over four hours of sitting in the makeup chair. Was it worth the effort? Yes, he says, especially when he found out the evening of revelry raised over $800,000 for the KKH Health Endownment Fund that helps children with chronic illnesses. When you play hard for a good cause, everyone wins.
