THIS STORY WAS FIRST PUBLISHED ON JUNE 10, 2020, AND UPDATED ON JULY 12, 2021.

Our appetite for confectionery like ice cream, cakes, and bubble tea is insatiable. We are lucky though that our tiny has is home to a number of local ice cream flavours that keep our sweet tooth satisfied with hand-crafted ice creams and gelatos. So when you feel like beating the heat with sweet treats, you'll no longer have to settle for the factory-made treats you've been buying at the supermarket.

1. Birds of Paradise

For a sweet treat that is gentle on your tastebuds, Birds of Paradise offers botanically-inspired gelato made in-house from natural ingredients, putting a twist on familiar flavours. With signatures like Strawberry Basil, Pandan and White Chrysanthemum delicately perfumed and flavoured from flowers, herbs and spices, you’ll be reaching for another scoop.

Available at Birds of Paradise.

2. Creamier

Creamier’s ice cream is best served on its crisp and fluffy homemade waffles, but its repertoire of nostalgic and classic flavours can definitely hold their own. The ice cream parlour's scoops are made in small batches from natural ingredients, counting Roasted Pistachio, Sea Salt Gula Melaka, Earl Grey Lavender and Blue Pea Vanilla amongst its bestsellers. There are also seasonal specials, such as Espresso and Salted Lemon Plum Sorbet.

Available at Creamier.

3. Holy Cow Creamery

Nestled in the laid-back neighbourhood of Yishun, Holy Cow Creamery surprises your tastebuds with its bold and creative flavours, such as Miss Saigon, flavoured with Vietnamese drip coffee; Mr Potato Head, featuring chocolate chips and potato chips; as well as Mao Shan Wang, rich with the flavour of durians. They also serve a mean waffle that perfectly complements your ice cream.

Available at Holy Cow Creamery.

4. Island Creamery

Established back in 2003, Island Creamery has definitely earned its rep in Singapore’s boutique ice cream scene. The ice cream parlour champions local flavours like Teh Tarik, Pineapple Tart, Pulut Hitam and even Tiger Sorbet, featuring Singapore’s well-loved Tiger Beer. Island Creamery’s scoops are made fresh on-site, with no artificial colours, flavourings or preservatives.

Available at Island Creamery.

5. Kindred Folk

Specialising in handmade artisanal ice creams, Kindred Folk stands out for its comforting drink-inspired flavours like Cereal Milk, Stylo-Milo, Sea-salt Gula Coconut, Matcha Gao, and Roasted Rice Milk Tea. For something boozy, Chocolate Bae is infused with Chocolate Bailey’s, while Better Than Bailey’s is a cocktail of Bailey’s and Bourbon ice-cream. Add on to your scoop with a charcoal waffle cone, fried mantou, or cookie bowl for that extra crunch.

Available at Kindred Folk.

6. Kind Kones

A godsend for anyone with dietary restrictions or who simply want to eat healthier, Kind Kones offers hand-crafted vegan ice cream that is free from dairy, soy, refined sugar, eggs, or any artificial additives and preservatives. There are also gluten-free options for those with stricter diets. Don’t be put off by the fact that it's vegan and assumingly less satisfying—Kind Kones’ scoops are so rich and flavourful it’s hard to tell the difference.

And with interesting flavours like Kampung Snickers, Keto Chocolate Sorbet, Matcha Coconut and Pandan Gula Melaka, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Individual pints are available on its website, or you can opt for bundles like the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich Kit or Brownie Sundae Kit.

7. Merely Ice Cream

All-natural, handcrafted ice cream is what you can expect at Merely, which makes their ice cream from fresh, quality ingredients. Finding its start at pop-ups and farmer’s markets around Singapore, The Ice Cream & Cookie Co. is now available in supermarkets like Cold Storage, Fairprice, Market Place and Redmart, but it remains true to its wholesome philosophy of all-natural ingredients and avoiding synthetic additives whenever possible. The brand also offers gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options for a healthier choice and for those with dietary restrictions.

Mouthwatering flavours include Bubble Milk Tea Gelato, Toasted Marshmallow Gelato, and Onde Onde ice cream. But of course, its signature product would have to be ice cream sandwiches, freshly made from scratch in small batches locally.
