This week, on April 22, the world will be celebrating Earth Day 2022. This year, the theme is investing in our planet because a green future is a prosperous one.

Together, the world will come together to renew our commitments to creating a sustainable environment for us to thrive.

For example, we can be more mindful about our shopping habits to ensure that we are buying from sustainable sources that will not disrupt the natural ecosystem of our planet.

We can also do our best to limit the amount of plastic we use when we buy items from supermarkets that are, currently, pretty heavily reliant on plastic packaging.

To help you shop more sustainably and reduce your usage of plastic, we’ve highlighted some grocery stores and sustainable shops in Singapore which are sustainable, plastic-free, and that will help you be more eco-friendly.

1. Ugly Food

Did you know that food waste is one of the biggest issues in Singapore and that the amount of food we are wasting has grown by about 20 per cent over the last 10 years, according to Towards Zero Waste?

To combat this problem, Uglyfood was founded in 2017 and its primary goal is to eliminate food waste so that it can revamp the food ecosystem. What Uglyfood does is that it collects blemished or excess food products and sells them back to customers at a significantly reduced price.

They sell everything from bread, fruits and vegetables and even ramen noodles.

Over the years, Uglyfood’s efforts have saved over 400 tonnes of perfectly edible food from being thrown away and filling our landfills.

The store is passionate about providing high-quality items to consumers that come directly from the source which means that products are priced competitively and farmers are well paid and showcased.
