Odette remains Best Restaurant in Singapore at No. 6, while Le Du was crowned the Best Restaurant in Asia 2023

The Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony returned to its physical glory at Resorts World Sentosa this evening (March 28), two years after it skipped out on the face-to-face event due to the pandemic.

Celebrating its 10th year anniversary, content director William Drew kickstarted that night by thanking the chefs, restaurants and gourmands who gathered at Resorts World Sentosa to partake in this occasion that celebrates the continent’s diverse F&B scene.

“We are thrilled to be back in Singapore,” enthused Drew, who let on that Singapore is a fitting location given that the Asia’s 50 Best Awards ceremony started in Singapore in 2013. While it has been a decade, the goal hasn’t changed: Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants recognises the best restaurants and chefs in the region who “shine the spotlight on their regional cuisines and culture”.

Thailand reigned supreme in this year’s ranking when Le Du was announced as the Best Restaurant in Asia. The visibly surprised and emotional chef-owner “Ton” Thitid Tassanakajohn (whose other Thai restaurant, Nusara, also placed at No. 3) shared how the accolade was “unexpected” but he feels extremely lucky to be included in this pantheon of great restaurants in Asia.

Earning the Best Restaurant in Japan award is Sézanne, which jumped 17 places to No. 2, while Tokyo’s Den restaurant (last year’s No. 1) placed at No. 4. Celebrated Indian chef Gaggan Anand is also one of the night’s big winners when his reopened eponymous restaurant in Bangkok re-entered at No. 5.

Singapore’s Best Restaurant is still Odette, which moved two spots to No. 6. The French restaurant’s pastry chef, Louisa Lim, was also named the year’s Best Pastry Chef.

Special mention was also given to Narisawa—the first Best Restaurant in Asia when it debuted in 2013 and a champion sustainable gastronomy in the continent—which has consistently been in the top 50 for 10 years. The restaurant is currently closed for renovations until May this year, but Narisawa and his 20-strong team are in Singapore for the Mandala Masters culinary residency.

In between the announcement of the 50 Best Restaurants, special awards were given to special chefs. Lolla head chef Johanne Siy was announced as the Best Female Chef; Florilege chef Hiroyasu Kawate took home the Inedit Damm Chefs' Choice Award, as voted by his peer chefs; and Della Tung from Ensue in Shenzen took home the inaugural Best Sommelier award.
