The 90+ Points Club Masterclass at this weekend’s Epicurean Market includes a taste of a true Rarity.

It’s easy to appreciate the unique opportunity the Treasury Wine Estates’ (TWE) 90+ Points Club Masterclass at this year’s Epicurean Market extends. These are, after all, a luxurious flight of wines from the company’s extensive portfolio that have each been awarded a minimum of 90 points by the world’s most trusted wine media, including Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, Wine Enthusiast, Wine & Spirits and James Halliday.

What could use some valuable insight is the fact that featured alongside the likes of the iconic 100-point 2010 Grange from acclaimed Australian producer Penfolds is the 99-point 2013 Rarity Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley’s Beaulieu Vineyards (BV). It’s even rarer when you consider that this vintage represents only the fourth time in 50 years this wine has been produced.

“Inspiration for the Beaulieu Vineyard Rarities Collection came from a special wine the vineyard’s legendary winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff first crafted in 1968 to show the distinctive, opulent expression of an extraordinarily high-quality vintage,” Samuel Stephens, TWE Wine Making Ambassador, tells us. “Since then, only four times has a wine received such an honour at Beaulieu Vineyard, the latest being the exceptional 2013 vintage.”

Stephens, who will also be lending an in-depth look into the making of the six internationally award-wining vintages at the masterclass this Sunday (Aug 13), explains that the powerful, complex character of the 2013 Rarity comes from BV’s finest barrel-lots of cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot, selected from its oldest vines, which were originally planted by its founder Georges de Latour in the early 1900s.

“A small amount of the Rarity blend also comes from neighbouring Hewitt Vineyard, which has been a component in BV’s finest cabernet sauvignon for more than 50 years,” he adds, before extoling the merits of the region’s ideal terroir.

Renowned critic Robert Parker has even called it “magical”, describing it as a rich, full-bodied wine that is “flirting with perfection”.

“It is a massive wine, highly extracted, and built for long, long-term cellaring,” he continues. And that only emphasises the young vintage’s uniquely expressive qualities.

And as if thoughts of tasting it for yourself aren’t drool-worthy enough, all attendees will be able to sample and purchase wines from brand favourites such as Penfolds and Beringer by the glass, as well as curated wine flights to complement their food-filled adventure.
