The new seasonal blend is part of the Reviving Origins programme that helps restore devastated coffee growing regions in the world

If you’re looking to spice up your caffeine consumption, Nespresso has recently launched Kahawa Ya Congo (literally translated as hope of Congo), a smooth and fruity organic coffee blend from the rain-rich volcanic soils of Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. What makes it an ideal morning beverage is that the beans are split roast, so a small portion gets a darker roast to intensify its sweet cereal and nutty aromas. Its intense flavours, accentuated with biscuity and walnut notes, will give a jolt of caffeine to your system to get the day started.

More than a delicious cuppa, the Kahawa ya Congo is part of Nespresso’s Reviving Origins programme, launched in 2019, which aims to revitalise coffee production in regions heavily impacted by diversities. “We’re delighted to introduce one of the world’s finest and most exclusive blends to our consumers,” affirmed Peilin Lee, Nespresso Singapore’s head of marketing, noting that Reviving Origins is also about rebuilding farming communities.

In collaboration with non-profit organisation TechnoServe, U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) and coffee trader Virunga Coffee/Olam International, Nespresso works with 2,500 farmers in South Kivu to increase the quality of their coffee and yield. At the same time, they guide the farmers on sustainable farming practices to ensure the survival of coffee production and increase their income.

Nespresso is aiming to expand this programme to North Kivu to help an estimated 1,700 more organic certified farmers, and the ultimate goal is to reach over 8,000 farmers by 2026.

One of the Kivu coffee farmers that benefitted from this initiative is Turanyi Kabasura, who explained that his remaining working days are better now because he is assured he’ll get a regular pay and bonus for each coffee sale. He added: “I can use that to develop other strategies, such as raising small livestock, or my wife can run a small business. I am starting to see the results of my work.”

To celebrate the launch of Kahawa ya Congo, the previous Reviving Origins seasonal offerings have also made a comeback—namely Amaha Awe Uganda, Tamuka Mu Zimbabwe and Esperanza De Colombia. All four seasonal blends are available online at Nespresso boutiques, while stocks last.
