Chef Moon Kyung Soo’s new lunchtime set menus combine a more affordable price range with Mikuni’s brand of playfully traditional Japanese cuisine.

Lacquered surfaces and muted lighting bestow Mikuni with a seductive elegance, well suited to dinner dates or business meetings. Chef Moon Kyung Soo’s new lunchtime set menus, however, look to cater to a broader audience, combining a more affordable price range with Mikuni’s brand of playfully traditional Japanese cuisine.

The Premium Bento, features nine exquisite dishes drawn from all three live stations in the restaurant. The sushi counter sends forth seasonal sashimi and freshly grated wasabi; king prawns luxuriating in a creamy, egg yolk-based sauce arrive from the teppanyaki counter; a hot stone serves as a DIY grill for marbled slices of Kagoshima wagyu beef. Moon’s proclivity for unobtrusive experimentation can be seen in the accompanying dips for the beef — aji amarillo paste, hailing from Peru, adds an interesting, spicy dimension. An Osaka-style bara chirashi, too, comes accessorised with a quirky mini pipette that’s used to drip soy sauce on the diced cubes of raw fish.

Lighter — but no less satisfying — options are the eight-dish Business Bento featuring Moon’s signature salmon sashimi with truffle soya dressing, and two robatayaki and teppanyaki set lunches which unfold at their respective live stations.

Mikuni’s Premium Bento is available at S$120 per person and the Business Bento is available at $58 per person.
