We begin a series of interviews with couples in high society on how they see their legacy in 100 years

Since its origins in 1874, Louis XIII Cognac has been the embodiment of exquisite craftsmanship. Throughout centuries, generations of cellar masters have been masterfully blending up to 1,200 grapes eau de vie sourced 100% from Grande Champagne, the first cru of the Cognac region. And befittingly, the cognacs are only bottled in impeccably handmade crystal decanters.

All these attention to precise craft, be it in the meticulous selection and blending of the eau de vie or fashioning an intricate bottle, is just one of many reasons Singaporean couple Anthony Yong and Siow Yin Yin are such admirers of the limited edition Louis XIII Black Pearl AHD.

MEET ANTHONY YONG

Anthony Yong’s interest in his family’s manufacturing business, Yong Tai Loong Pte Ltd, was piqued from a young age, as his father would always bring him along when visiting facilities and factories. School holidays were spent learning skills of the trade from his father and Yong was already helping out with product design improvements in primary school.

Yong notes, “As a manufacturer of metal works, supplying bomb shelter doors and mailboxes to both private and government sectors, our customer’s satisfaction is always of utmost importance.” Hence, he is driven by the same ethos as Rémy Martin, the producers of Louis XIII: crafting a well-designed product that lasts. An ethos he hopes to also pass down to his next generation.

I purchased two Louis XIII Black Pearl AHD editions for both my children and I hope to pass it down to them in the future. Likewise, I hope to be able to pass my business down to my son and daughter, and that it stays in the family for the next 100 years.

MEET SIOW YIN YIN

Even as the second-generation owner of the family’s manufacturing business, Yong concedes that his wife, Siow, has the most important job: taking care of their children, aged 15 and 10. The couple shares that they are gradually teaching their kids to appreciate wine and Champagne, and in the future, Louis XIII Cognac.

Yong says, “To me, Louis XIII Cognac represents a collectible item. The price of the two bottles of Louis XIII Black Pearl Anniversary Edition I bought in 2014—one for myself and one for my wife—has already almost doubled. I purchased two Louis XIII Black Pearl AHD editions for both my children and I hope to pass it down to them in the future. Likewise, I hope to be able to pass my business down to my son and daughter, and that it stays in the family for the next 100 years.”

How did you start appreciating Louis XIII?

Anthony Yong (AY) I first tried Louis XIII at a Ferrari event I attended. I like it so much I started purchasing bottles—I now have about 12 of the original and about five limited edition bottles. During Chinese New Year, birthday celebrations or whenever we have parties with friends, we’ll bring a bottle out to share.

What is it about Louis XIII Cognac that you two love?

AY The incomparable taste of Louis XIII is significantly different and superior to other cognacs. Plus, I like the overall presentation of the bottles, the crystal decanters. My favourite is actually the Louis XIII Black Pearl AHD, because the bottle is very unique—its metallic sheen appeals to me, as a manufacturer of metal works, even more.

Siow Yin Yin (SYY) The French cognac is aromatic and smooth on the palate, and pairs very well with our favourite cuisines, especially Japanese and Chinese food.

Why do you think it is important to pass on the appreciation of Louis XIII to the next generation?

SYY  In this fast-paced world, everything is expected to be instant, but you cannot do that with cognac. It takes time for the nectar to acquire its fine taste, and accordingly one needs to drink and savour Louis XIII with different types of cuisine to learn to appreciate it. Every pairing is a new experiment and experience for the palate. Similar to going through different phases of life, with each new experience, one will develop different outlooks and perspectives in life.

What is the most important life advice you hope will stay in your family for the next century?

AY Treat people the way you want to be treated; treat them with respect and they’ll treat you back with respect.

SYY This world will only get smaller and smaller; keep the faith and believe in yourself.

The bottle

The shape of Louis XIII Cognac decanters is famously inspired by a 16th-century royal flask found on the battlefield of Jarnac. Paul-Emile Rémy Martin acquired the flask, registered the rights for its reproduction, and entrusted only the most skilled crystal manufacturers in France to produce the decanters for his Cognac.

Crystal-maker Baccarat has outdone themselves with the special Louis XIII Black Pearl AHD decanter. The mouth-blown, hand-made crystal bottle shimmers a metallic hue, achieved through the delicate palladium plating that creates a multitude of reflections.
