In celebration of International Burger Day on May 28, we've corralled a selection of sumptuous options made with alternative meat patties

Who doesn’t love a good burger? Considered by many the ultimate comfort food, it’s a luscious combination of perfectly-grilled patties, gooey cheese, fresh greens and tomatoes, stacked between toasted brioche buns.

But we know that too much of a good thing can be bad for you. And that's why there’s been a steady rise of conscious diners looking for plant-based alternatives; the most popular is arguably the Impossible Foods, which debuted in Singapore at eight restaurants in 2019.

Nowadays, you’ll find most burger joints offering Impossible burgers on the menu. But here are five of our favourites.

1/5 PS.Cafe

When done well, the Impossible burger is popular amongst meat aficionados because it looks and tastes very similar to meat. And this homegrown café does it justice. The patty is cooked to a juicy “medium rare”, so it achieves a beautifully charred exterior and a pinkish core. While the texture is chewier than meat, the taste is closer to grass-fed beef with pronounced earthy notes. This goes well with accompaniments of melted cheddar cheese, sautéed mushrooms, crispy onions, and fresh lettuce and tomatoes, sandwiched between toasted sesame buns. Served with a side of fries. 2/5 Potato Head

When we think of good burgers in Singapore, Potato Head always comes to mind for its wide variety of umami-rich offerings, including a selection of Impossible Foods creations. What stands out for us is the Impossible Hombre, a beautiful mess of alternative-meat patty grilled to a succulent, smoky finish and crowned with roasted peppers, sour cream, cheddar cheese and jalapeño pickles. It’s even better with the "three islands mayo" and Impossible hot chilli. All the ingredients are nestled between toasted brioche buns. Click here to order.

3/5 The Coffee Academics

The folks at Coffee Academics made good on their promise to deliver a scrumptious plant-based burger. Its Impossible burger comprises a thick and juicy patty that’s evenly grilled. The burger is also comparatively richer, as it’s stacked with an egg, sunny-side up, and portobello mushrooms. This is contrasted with spicy jalapeños, pickled gherkins and fresh tomatoes. It comes in fluffy charcoal buns and served with a side of greens and sweet potato fries. Click here to order.

4/5 Three Buns

One of the biggest burgers we’ve seen so far is the aptly named Le Big Mock, but it’s less sinful than you would think. The highlight is its smashed mock meat patties, two layers featuring its well-seasoned recipe that seem to boasts meatier flavours. These are complemented with gooey vegan cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce and cucumber, as well as soya milk mayo. To boot, it's stacked between toasted mango flour sesame buns, which are baked in-house daily. Click here to order.

5/5 Omakase Burger

The Omakase X Impossible burger also stands out from the pack with its specially prepared patties that uses a secret blend of ingredients. They are then cooked on the grill using the “smashed burger” method to intensify the smoky and umami flavours. The flavours are enhanced with fresh lettuce, tomatoes and melted cheddar cheese. Held together by brioche buns that soak up all the “meaty” goodness you can taste with every bite, this burger is as satisfying as a burger lover would expect. Click here to order.
