In the food business? Here are a few suggestions to support Pinktober

Breast cancer can strike anyone regardless of age, gender and even health habits. It’s a scary thought, but not many people know that this disease can be prevented, especially during the earlier stages. Hence, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month – celebrated every October - was created.

While many industries that are involved in this campaign are from the beauty or fashion world, food businesses can also do their part to spread the word. In fact, most restaurants in other countries (and a handful in Singapore) always have something planned just for this special month.

Whether it’s about collaborating with charities to preparing special baked goods, here are some ways to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month through food; and at the same time, help save lives.

Special Menu
For restauranteurs and chefs

There are already a number of organisations in Singapore that aim to raise breast cancer awareness amongst Singaporeans. Though they have come a long way, they still need you to reach out to more people. And you can do this through donations.

In coming up with funds for this worthy cause, you can use food and create a special menu available in October only. Entice more people by including signature and new creations. From the proceeds, you can donate a portion of the proceeds to your chosen charity.

Pink Hours
For patisserie owners and pastry chefs

Aside from displaying pink ribbons in your patisserie, why don’t you create special desserts for this campaign too? Make it more exciting by sticking to the colour theme and whip up pink desserts such as macarons, cupcakes and cakes. Build the hype by selling them for certain hours in a day (e.g. 4-6pm) and donate a part of your sales to a foundation.

Charity Merchandise
For food business owners

There’s so much merchandise you can create to support Breast Cancer Awareness month to add to the iconic pink ribbons. If you own a food business, the sky’s the limit as you can create pastries, original recipes and other food products. This campaign will help build the funds of your chosen organisation to aid them in spreading the word.

These are just some helpful suggestions for people in the food business to create more awareness for breast cancer. But there are many more ways to aid this cause – no matter what age you are or industry you’re in. One thing to remember is that it can be prevented – everyone just needs to do their part to spread this important message.
