The food festival is back for the second time, and now it's bigger and better with 10 participating chefs whipping up signature eats from their home countries

“There is a misconception that Latin American cuisine is mainly Mexican and Peruvian,” admits Peruvian chef Daniel Chavez of the Ola Kitchen Group. That’s what he wanted to change when he came up with Latinada, Singapore’s first Latin American festival, which is back this year from September 8 to 16.

Now on its second edition, Daniel confirmed that it’s a much bigger event, with 10 invited chefs from Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Puerto Rico cooking at 12 participating establishments.

What’s the best way to start a Latin American party? That would be with a street food festival at Camp Kilo, dubbed Domingo Tropical (September 8, 4pm-8pm), where guests get to tuck into all-time favourites, from tacos and roasted pork to ceviche and themed cocktails, all while listening to lively Latino beats. In fact, some salsa dancing after, to burn off those extra calories, is recommended.

The party continues at other Kilo concepts. At Kilo Kitchen, guest chef Christian Encina (Pica, Ubud) is in charge of the asado (Chilean barbecue), the centerpiece of the feast on September 12 (5.30pm-12am).

Kilo Kitchen co-founder Josh Adjodha takes over the following day (September 13, 5.30pm-12am) for Noche Caribeña, where he’ll present a slew of dishes and cocktails inspired by the diverse islands of Central America.

Over at Tono Cevicheria, you’ve got Cuban Night (September 10, 6pm-9.30pm), dedicated to the country’s nostalgic flavours with dishes like lobster empanadas and moros y cristianos (rice and beans); and PeruMexico (September 11, 6pm-9.30pm), which, as the name implies showcases quintessential dishes from the two countries, such as ceviche and costilla cargada con esquites (corn dish).

It’s Chavez's brainchild, after all, so you can expect to see him in various activities. At Ola Cocina Del Mar, he’ll be showcasing the beautiful Nikkei cuisine with the help of Edwin Guzman (Aji, MGM Cotai) and Encina at Barra Latina “Nikkei” (September 12, 7pm-10pm).

A first this year, chefs Fernando Arevalo (Preludio) and Ivan Brehm (Nouri) will lend their helping hand to promote Latin American fare. Arevalo will team up with Guzman for Movimiento Preludio (September 10, 6pm-9.30pm); both chefs will do their creative interpretations of Latin American flavours following Preludio’s monochromatic theme.

Ivan closes the show with chefs Chavez and Diego Jacquet (Bochinche and Restaurant Zoilo in London) cooking for the Our Journey Back Home dinner (September 16, 7pm-10pm) at Bochinche. The epic six-hands feast will be a showcase a creative nod to nostalgic eats from the chefs' home countries.
