“Many years ago, my cousins told me about Fook Seng Goldenhill Chicken Rice and I have been a fan of their chicken rice. The bird is poached just right that it is a tad undercooked and the residual heat cooks it—hence, it is moist and tender. The sauce is not overly salty and the chilli sauce is punchy. In fact, I would usually buy a jar of extra chilli for $4 because it is extremely affordable. That said, the chicken rice gives me a home-cooked and less commercialised feel that I enjoy. It’s also tucked away in Jalan Rumah Tinggi, so those who know will know.”

Lam Bee Chicken Rice on Circuit Road, within Grains & Hops coffeeshop, is where I go for the best chicken rice. I used to live in the vicinity and that is how I discovered this place.

The chicken is always perfectly cooked—tender and not a dry flake in sight! The soy sauce dressing on the chicken is also well balanced: savoury, sweet, and aromatic. Finally, the chilli is amazing, and I love getting a good serving in every bite—really livens up the plate!”

“My favourite chicken rice is from Pin Xiang Hainanese Chicken Rice at Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre Singapore when I am craving for this hawker food. I discovered it when I first moved to Bedok in 2018, and I even visited this place every fortnight for two years straight.

I would always order the roasted chicken with preserved vegetables. The chickens are delivered fresh from the farms daily and are carefully chosen to weigh above 2.2kg each. This is to ensure the poultry maintains its tender and juicy texture throughout the cooking process. I prefer it roasted as the skin is charred, smoky and crispy.”

“For me, the best chicken rice is at Chin Chin Eating House on 19 Purvis Street. We discovered Chin Chin when we first came to Purvis Street to look for a space for our restaurant, Salted & Hung. We had lunch there that afternoon, and since then, it has been my go-to place for chicken rice. So that’s going on five years now!

I love Chin Chin’s chicken as it is super tender and very moist. The rice is extra fluffy and really flavourful – cooked with lots of chicken fat, and flavoured with scallion, ginger. They also serve it with a great chilli sauce which is fresh and bright. You can say it gets the holy trinity of chicken rice right.”

“When I first arrived in Singapore in 2006, I had my first chicken rice at Loy Kee Best Chicken Rice on Balestier Road. I went there for lunch on my first day off from work, and I have been patronising the stall for 14 years. I love the roasted chicken rice for its taste and consistency, and the owners cook it following a heritage recipe that remains unchanged.”

"When I was a teenager 18 years ago, I was hanging out at Junction 8 with some friends after school and we stumbled upon Ming Kee Chicken Rice in a coffee shop. We all opted for different items to eat and I naturally went for chicken rice as it was an easy and delicious dish you can’t go wrong with.

The cold plump chicken served on top of steaming hot fragrant rice got me frequenting the store. The jelly under the skin of the chicken mixed with the good kick of spiciness from the chilli is irresistible.

Unlike other stores, they don’t have their steamed chickens hanging. Instead, the chickens are “swimming” in an ice-cool tub waiting to be chopped up and served on a plate ensuring a firm gelatinous texture."
