Saffredi is an Italian red that has set the standard for wines on the coast of Tuscany for the past four decades. James Suckling tasted almost every vintage of the wine ever made last summer and found the bordeaux blend’s best bottles were the most recent releases. Here are the top five vintages of Fattoria Le Pupille Toscana Saffredi.

Another great Saffredi after the perfect 100-point 2012. I tasted it a year ago and thought it was sensational. Even better now. Dense and structured yet shows a lively, jazz-like vibe that gives it form and beauty. Needs four to five years to soften. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. 98 points

A powerful and ripe red with lots of dried berry, chocolate, meat and currant character. Full body, chewy and ripe tannins, and a tight and tannic finish. Needs a few years to soften. Shows the heat of the vintage. Better in 2018. 97 points
