What’s trending on social media? It’s not your usual popstars or celebrities — it’s these delicious-looking treats.

In this realm of virality, it’s not only babies or cats that are making the online headlines, but unique and edible creations as well. Most recently, our eyes were treated to gorgeous cakes all the way from Russia; while here in Asia, we also gave the world a taste of our creativity with pizzas you can light on fire and a cake which looks like a giant teardrop. What else can you find online? Here are some of them.

Teardrop Cake

It’s not surprising that this dessert — which looks more like a giant teardrop — hails from Japan, the land of the ramen burger, green tea-flavoured Kitkat, octopus ice cream and wasabi beer.

Known as mizu shingen mochi, or the raindrop cake in the US, it’s a variety of the rice cake or Shingen Moshi made from water sourced directly from the Japanese alps, and served with soybean powder and brown sugar syrup. It’s mixed with a secret ingredient which allows it to retain its shape for a good 30 minutes before it turns into a puddle.

It can also be found in the Australia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

The Place Dining, Seoul, South Korea

Next time you visit South Korea, make sure you check out The Place Dining for its one-of-a-kind bomb pizza. This original creation is served as an inflated calzone, or a dome of dough and lit in front of you to cook and melt the ingredients inside.

Once it’s done, they cut the top open revealing an extra hot and gooey pizza. It comes in different flavours, so don’t be surprised if your dome comes in different colours such as brown, yellow or red.

 Colour-changing Cake

USA

Is it red, yellow or blue? Actually, it’s all of the above. The trippy cake created by American baker, Charlotte Sometimes changes colours when you spin it around. Although it seems like magic, the trick lies in the icing.

To create it, she covered the base with white icing and created a pattern of waves using an icing comb. She then used six different colours and sprayed them in different angles; hence, the optical illusion. While this may be a great idea for a birthday cake, it’s sadly not available for purchase.

 Rainbow Bagel

Bagel Store, Brooklyn, USA

According to baker and owner of the Bagel Store, Scott Rosillo, he has been making this rainbow-coloured treat for two decades. Thanks to social media, his creation became an Internet sensation and attracted throngs of foodies to have a bite of the “world’s most beautiful bagel”.

Referring to it as a labour of love, the team dyes different doughs with various colours before they flatten and stack them all together. They are sliced, rolled and baked before it’s deep-fried; and when they come out, they look more like Play Doh treats than something edible. But they’re still quite tasty, especially with the ‘funfetti’ cream cheese on top.

Russia

Giving us major #FoodPorn is Russian pâtissier Olga Noskova, who gained Internet fame and a massive Instagram following with her mesmerising creations. Scroll through her feed and be in awe of her cakes with a flawless and glossy finish that make them seem more like artwork you should display rather than eat.

By mixing different coloured glazes, she has managed to make her cakes look like the Northern Lights, universe and even a golden egg. While these are available for orders, you can only purchase them if you’re in Russia.
