It isn’t unusual to see ornamental stone dials on watches, but Jaquet Droz ups the game with its new and achingly beautiful Minerals collection.

Watch with a spectrolite dial

Those familiar with time-honoured Swiss manufacture Jaquet Droz will know that it is responsible for some of the most amazing métiers d’art work to go down in history. Its enamelled dials are legendary, as are its gold sculpted automatons. Now, the watchmaker has its eyes set on unravelling the beauty of raw stones, with sublime results.

Ruby heart dial

Nine types of gemstones are featured as entire sliced and polished dials in Jaquet Droz’s new Minerals collection, and what we adore about it is that most of the gems are not your usual suspects. In addition to the rather expected lapis lazuli, mother-of-pearl and onyx, there are exotic names like aventurine, bronzite, imperial jasper, meteorite, ruby heart and spectrolite (labradorite).

These stones are used on watches that span several models, namely the 43mm Grande Seconde, the Petite Heure Minute 35mm, The Eclipse 39mm, Lady 8 35mm, Grande Date 43mm, and the 43mm Grande Heure Minute.

It is often said that you don’t choose the stone, but the stone chooses you. So what will it be? The cool and mysterious Grande Second Meteorite, the whacky Grande Seconde Spectrolite, the rock-steady Grande Seconde Bronzite, or the cheerful Grande Seconde Imperial Jasper? Or would you prefer the flamboyant Petite Heure Minute Ruby Heart, the ultra-feminine Eclipse Mother-of-Pearl, the seductive Lady 8 Aventurine, the sophisticated Grande Date Lapis Lazuli, or the sleek Grande Heure Minute Onyx?
