(Relaxnews) - British-based retailer Roman Originals maintains that people are free to disagree over the exact colorings of its controversial stripey dress.

British-based retailer Roman Originals maintains that people are free to disagree over the exact colorings of its controversial stripey dress. "It's open to interpretation but we like to think it's blue and black," the company's Creative Manager, Ian Johnson, told Mashable.

Tumblr user Swiked had posted a photo of the dress to the internet on Thursday, February 26, prompting debate and confusion about its true colors.
Some saw a gold and white dress and others a blue and black garment instead, an effect thought to hinge on peculiarities in the way the human eye interprets shades of light and dark. A run on the retailer's stock of the bodycon dress meant that existing stock sold out "within an hour."
"We are thinking about making a gold and white version," Johnson said of the £50 ($77) item, noting even a relatively simple palette swap have to meet quality assurance requirements.
