Over the past seasons, fashion designers have gone to great lengths to rejuvenate the Haute Couture industry, helping it dust off its prim, old-school image and making it appealing to the gilded youth of today. But every once in a while, a fashion house brings us a blast from the past that seems perfectly in sync with a collection.

Sultry black birdcage veils rocked the runway on Tuesday at Chanel's spectacular garden party show at the Grand Palais. As the ultimate creator of IT accessories, Creative Director for Chanel Karl Lagerfeld is well-versed in predicting (or deciding) what will be the next big thing. While some models, including Chanel muse Kendall Jenner, donned delicate birdcage veils, others wore wide-brimmed "day at the races" hats embellished with black tulle.
The head gear brought a somber element to this collection featuring color pops of burnt orange and cobalt blue, two shades that are emerging as SS15's hottest hues.

However, little did he know, Giambattista Valli had already tapped the trend for voilette veils at his show on Monday night, where he presented silhouettes that he said were for a woman who is a cross between Coco Chanel and Janis Joplin.
So we have Mademoiselle Chanel to thank for the return of birdcage veils -- who, let's not forget, started out as a milliner. Hat design was Gabrielle's claim to fame.
