When the fashion world looks to Asian history, the blending of cultures creates some stunning looks on the runway.

SAMURAI SPIRIT: Models backstage at Alexander McQueen's Spring/Summer 2015 show.

Fashion is known to be cut-throat and Alexander McQueen is on guard with a look inspired by Japanese samurai warriors. Marquetry leather painted with petals in lantern red (far right) is balanced with chiffon and organza, and embellished with silk-embroidered cherry blossoms in geisha pink—influenced by ancient kimonos. Carven, too, revisits Edo for inspiration, as prints from vintage Japanese painted postcards are contemporarily reworked in silks. The jiaoren mermaid from southern Chinese folklore provides the prints for Shiatzy Chen. Underwater motifs are seen on the key silhouette of the cropped jacket in a marine black, coral red and aquamarine palette.
