Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore shimmied on the red carpet in a shimmery Chanel haute couture gown. Grace Tay takes a look back on the making of this Karl Lagerfeld creation.

She took home an Oscar as Best Actress, and simultaneously made it to many a best-dressed list at the 87th Academy Awards in February. Julianne Moore’s winning pick for the red carpet: an elegant Chanel haute couture bustier dress with a mermaid train, designed for her by Karl Lagerfeld. “I wanted that dress to feel timeless and classic. I wanted to feel like I could look back and always love it,” said the actress, who had been nominated for an Academy Award four times previously. Her sensitive portrayal of an Alzheimer’s sufferer in Still Alice finally clinched her an Oscar that many said was long overdue.

Chanel creative director Lagerfeld was equally delighted at Moore’s win: “I am so happy Julianne won the Oscar for her great talent. I’ve known her for years and was always her greatest fan—as an actress and also as a woman. She is the perfect illustration of what I understand to be womanhood in the best sense of the word. She is fun, down-to-earth and an extremely cheerful, lovable person. I am really happy for her.”

The dress that joins Moore in the Academy Award hall of fame was a painstakingly embellished white organza confection lined with satin crepe, an epic production in itself: it was 987 hours in the making and took 27 people to complete.
