Hybrid dressing

Blurring the lines between smart and casual was one of the main trends to come out of NYFW Men’s. Michael Kors led the way, teaming smart pea coats with city shorts, anorak trenches with cropped trousers, belted shorts with silk bombers and cotton polo shirts with linen sateen trousers, for an exemplary exercise in dressed-down chic. The approach was also adopted by Nautica, who mixed up city looks with a vacation vibe, incorporating windbreakers, chinos and shorts into its collection. David Hart X Hart Schaffner Marx also teamed exotic beach shorts and espadrilles with blazers and ties for a playfully ironic twist.

The catwalks were awash with white, with several labels using the colour to break up their collections with a crisp freshness. Carlos Campos dressed models head-to-toe in whites and creams, injecting a quirkiness into the ensemble with a jaunty necktie. Michael Kors completed outfits with rugged white Oxford shoes and Katama experimented with short sleeved shirts, tank tops, windbreakers and sweat tops in various shades of ivory and light grey.

Pattern, pattern, pattern

It wasn’t all monochrome however, there were splashes of riotous pattern on the catwalks. Ricardo Seco opted for abstract intergalactic motifs in pinks and purples, teamed with mirrored visor hats for a futuristic look. David Hart X Hart Schaffner Marx offered a low-key alternative in the form of checkered blazers, and Thorsun peppered shirts and shorts with quirky botanical illustrations.
