Some of the finest products to come across our desks in recent years, we sat down with IOMA Paris' founder and CEO to find out more about the brand taking the beauty world by storm.  

If you haven't heard of IOMA Paris, then prepare to have your beauty routine transformed. The brainchild of scientist Mr Jean Michel Karam, IOMA is one of the only beauty brands in the world to offer individual, personalised solutions. Intrigued? We thought you might be. So read on as we discover more about this brilliant beauty find.

Having trained in microelectronics, how did you find your way into the world of beauty?

Initially, I did not have a plan. It was in 2002 and MEMSCAP, the high-tech Company I founded and still chair, was focused on optical communications, a market which collapsed during that year. We were looking for diversifications so we acquired six companies which diversified by business to include aerospace, medical and biomedical, etc. One day, when coming from a dermatology visit, I thought that we can use our technology, MEMS, to develop a system that measures the characteristics of the skin and we can sell it to the dermatologists and plastic surgeons. So in June 2002, we developed the first prototype of a device capable of measuring several parameters of the skin. An article went out in the press and the next day, all the cosmetic industry was calling me to know more on the device. This how I met Vera Strübi, who at that time was President of Thierry Mugler, and a board member of Clarins. She became my friend and I decided not to sell my device to the cosmetic brands but only to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, test laboratories and ingredient companies. As a consequence, our technology became the reference in skin metrology and nobody challenges it when we launched IOMA in June 2010, backed by such unique technology.

IOMA has such a unique way of working – can you please tell us how this came about?

IOMA uses science and technology for the benefit of skincare. The brand is based on three pillars: personalization, proof and unique experience. We will bring the right solution for our consumers regardless the trends, the challenges and what other brands do!

IOMA skincare works differently to other off the shelf products doesn't it?

For IOMA, the starting point is the objective understanding of each person's skin. Because each person is unique and each type of beauty is exclusively individual, IOMA considers every single treatment a personal one. IOMA has developed cutting-edge devices using the most advanced technology to analyze the condition of every skin and to reveal each imperfection. A combination of skincare products, each formulated to treat separate skin issues, is customized to provide a prescription specifically adapted to the person’s needs. IOMA offers the luxury of personalized skincare made specifically for each individual, selected from seven specialized lines for the face and bespoke products.

What are the main concerns that IOMA seeks to address?

IOMA is a different brand. Our mission is very ambitious, as we aim to eliminate the physical expression of aging via personalized solutions. My dream, if you like, is to look good when I die! I think that if we push the aging processes far away, we will not look old when our heart stops.

For someone new to the line, what products would you recommend?

The IOMA devices are able to understand your skin, to reveal what we cannot see and to propose your own formula. It’s the guarantee to obtain the best results. Talking of the products, which are you most proud of?

I cannot choose one product. Each product is a story, each product has its own formula to bring the best results. So, it’s as if you are asking a father to choose between his own children!

Actually, all our skin diagnosis devices, available in all our points of sales in the world, are connected to the IOMA Cloud which enabled us to build the Atlas of Skin, built from millions of diagnostics around the world. Such unique data base enables us to continuously enhance our formulas and to develop products that are really needed by consumers in different places in the planet.
