Melissa Gail Sing speaks to Ho Khai Lie about what Christmas means to her.

Our most loved season of the year is here again, bringing with it our favourite sights, smells and sounds, cooler weather, feelings of nostalgia and good cheer all around. While some may say that Christmas, like many other major festivals, has become too commercialised, what with sales and promotions at every turn, Ho Khai Lie proves that the real meaning of the Yuletide is well and alive!

Ho Khai Lie, 15

What does Christmas mean to you?

Christmas, to me, means spending time with those whom I love and those who love me. It is not about the exchanging of gifts but it is an occasion when I am able to spend quality time with my loved ones. To me, it is also a day of laughter and joyherher. , and not having to worry about any stress or problems that I would face in my everyday life.

What’s your favourite part about the season?

My favorite part of the season is being able to spend quality time with my family. Due to their hectic work schedules, family bonding sessions are very limited but the holiday season gives us a great opportunity to spend more time with one another.

Tell us about your most unforgettable Christmas.

My favourite Christmas is probably the one I spent in America back in 2012. For a long time, I had wanted to go to the States, and there couldn’t have been a more perfect season to go than Christmas. I made many great new friends on the trip, and I will forever cherish my memories of that Christmas. We visited places such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and more, and what made the trip even more fun and exciting was the fact that everything that I had previously only seen in pictures was right in front of me.

Christmas is also a time for being thankful. What are you most thankful for?

I am extremely thankful and blessed for the opportunities that I have, the opportunities that allow me to do what I love. I am also very thankful for having the chance to receive an education from a school and for the fact that I have a stable roof over my head. On the other hand, I am also thankful for all the bad times and not-so-pleasant experiences. Even though they were tough, they made me stronger and they have shaped me to become who I am today. Most importantly, I am extremely thankful for my wonderful family and friends, for their unfailing love and support.

What’s the one thing you really wish for this Christmas?

The one thing I want for Christmas, is for all my loved ones as well as myself to stay healthy and happy. Health and happiness is something that money cannot buy.
