According to See Hooi Geok, anaesthesiologists are the “hidden doctors” of the surgery scene. “We predict what can happen and smoothen the process, minimising complications and making complex processes seem simple.” Her accomplishments, however, are far from latent. In the past two years, the associate consultant of anaesthesiology at the Singapore General Hospital has had to get accustomed to a new speciality, working with emergency doctors, paramedics and pilots to treat patients by the roadside and on the airport apron, and going through the Helicopter Underwater Egress Training, which equips her with emergency aquatic survival skills. Hooi Geok also volunteered with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) from 2009 to 2010, and continues to donate to the international humanitarian organisation yearly. When in need of a breather, the 37-year-old turns to Chinese art painting, which she hope to pursue once she retires.
