If it were not for Grab, US-based transport app Uber would be dominating the local market. But Malaysian-born Anthony Tan, together with fellow Harvard Business School alum Tan Hooi Ling, have not only taken on an industry titan with their fruit of labour, but surpassed it in Southeast Asia, operating in 34 cities compared to Uber’s 20. After just five years, their Singapore-based business is now valued at more than US$3b. The 35-year-old, who is also CEO of the company, soon hopes to introduce self-driving vehicles, and Alibaba’s Jack Ma is currently looking to invest US$1.5b in the company. Anthony’s ultimate dream, however, is to have the “superhuman ability to go without food and sleep”, so he has more time for his faith, family and work.
