Karl Lagerfeld captivated the fashion world once again with the French maison's fall/winter 2017 show, held Tuesday, March 7 in Paris. And while attendees revelled in the label's new collection, it was above all the show's theatrics that caused a sensation, concluding with a huge rocket blasting off from the middle of the French capital's Grand Palais. The buzz soon spilled over onto the internet following the fashion house's grandiose show at the Grand Palais exhibition center.

Chanel brought a futuristic vision to the new season, channelled both through its autumn/winter 2017/2018 collection and the show's theatrics. Most notably, the show featured a giant rocket installed on a stage, around which the models walked. This then proceeded to blast off from its launchpad at the end of the show. It may have only soared a few meters, but that was enough to captivate the show's audience.
While the collection had a decidedly retro vibe—with boots, skirt suits and pant suits seeming straight out of the 1960s—it also transported the audience into Chanel's very own space-age. The collection's materials and colours notably highlighted this futuristic feel, with shiny boots in shades of white, pink and silver, for example. Some models even walked the runway draped in quilted space blankets.
Tweed was evidently present, but this season saw the label's signature fabric twisted to give the new wardrobe a futuristic edge. It came matched with tights, big sweaters or bags, shimmering in shades of silver or black. As well as shiny details, the collection nodded to an interstellar theme with constellations of hundreds of beads and gemstones on various dresses and ensembles, covering them totally or partially, along with lunar motifs and astronauts.
The show's models—including Gigi and Bella Hadid, Lineisy Montero, Kendall Jenner and Camille Hurel—also sported futuristic hairstyles. With hair pulled back, and just enough volume to create a "back from space" look, they wore wide headbands finished with gemstones and beads.
After taking the fashion world to an airport terminal, couture ateliers, a data center, a supermarket and a Parisian brasserie, Karl Lagerfeld can now boast of having transported his audience to the moon and back.
