In the golden age of travel, postcards were the medium du jour for people to update their friends and family while they were on vacation with thoughts of “wish you were here” or simply to say hello. It made the perfect travel souvenir, and a memento of a journey, years later. Regrettably, the art of writing postcards has fallen by the wayside in the age of Facebook and Instagram.
In celebration of its 130th anniversary and age-old tradition of being part of the lives of its guests and the community, Raffles Singapore hopes to revive this art with a special project “Raffles Inspires – A Secret Postcard Sale”. Whether it was a welcome encounter with the legendary Raffles doorman in his smart white Gieves and Hawkes military uniform, or that first sip of the Singapore Sling at the hotel’s Long Bar, reminisce your memories of the grand dame through a series of postcards, which is on sale from now till June 11.
These postcards were designed by distinguished guests of Raffles Singapore, local personalities, students from local educational institutions, as well as individuals from Autism Association (Singapore). Their identities will be revealed progressively throughout the 10-day sale.
There are 50 limited-edition designs, with only 130 pieces of each available. Each postcard costs $10, and all proceeds will go to Autism Association (Singapore). Get yours at the Raffles Inspires Secret Postcard Shop, which was created and designed by Singapore fashion director and creative curator Daniel Boey, in collaboration with students from Raffles College of Higher Education.
Pick a design (or five) that best captures your memories of Raffles Singapore, mail the postcard to a friend (or better yet, someone you shared a memorable Raffles experience with), with an invite for a drink of the Singapore Sling at the hotel’s Bar & Billiard Room (as the Long Bar is closed), before the grand dame closes at the end of the year, as part of the final phase of its three-phase restoration programme. The hotel is expected to reopen mid-2018.
